Webinar will Share Status of a Smartphone App to Help Growers Count Grape Clusters March 09, 2021
SEATTLE (March 5, 2021) – Automating the labor-intensive task of crop estimation has long been a research goal of the wine grape industry. Washington State University researchers are leading an effort to develop a cutting edge smartphone app to address the issue, and the industry is invited to a one-hour webinar on April 8 to hear all about it.
Each summer, wine grape growers and wineries spend thousands of hours counting and weighing grape berries and clusters to estimate crop yields. It’s a vital step to guide vineyard management decisions, but it doesn’t provide real-time data. Because the estimate represents only one point in time, weather events occurring after data collection can skew the numbers.

In their first appearance at the Basin Reserve, the Hinds must have wished the turf would gobble them up. They put Devine down from consecutive Georgia Atkinson deliveries when she was on 54, again when she was on 62, and a fourth time when she was on 82 – an easy caught and bowled chance by Melissa Hansen.

Central Hinds player Hannah Rowe catches Wellington Blaze opener Maddy Green at long-off at the Basin Reserve on Sunday afternoon. Impressive leg-spinner Atkinson, who nabbed 1-26 from her spell, must have felt sick as three of them were shelled off her bowling. Speaking to Spark Sport post-match, Devine labelled her innings “pretty poor” due to the chances she gifted.

Some school divisions in Manitoba are now looking ahead to the end of a post-holiday period of mandatory remote learning for older students. In December, Manitoba Education announced students in grades 7-12 would learn exclusively from home for the first two weeks of the new year. That period ends on Friday, Jan 15. CTV News has obtained a letter to parents from the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobane advising their schools will return to a level orange status starting Monday, Jan. 18. The letter stated that students will be in class while maintaining a separation of six feet. This includes students in grades 7 to 12.

Webinar to Explore Grape Mechanization
Registration open for Jan. 20 WAVEx mechanization webinar January 07, 2021
SEATTLE – Wine grape growers are invited to register for an upcoming webinar dedicated to vineyard mechanization. The free WAVEx mechanization webinar is scheduled for January 20, 2021 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
The webinar will feature results of a study led by Dr. Clark Seavert, Oregon State University agricultural economist, who recently benchmarked the economics of vineyard mechanization for the Oregon and Washington wine industries. The study, funded by Oregon’s Erath Foundation and the Washington State Wine Commission, used Oregon and Washington wine grape production costs to compare costs of vineyard tasks performed by hand labor and existing mechanical implements.
