dan: police think they have their man in the shooting of a fremont police officer. good evening, i m dan noyes. it was close. after heading south from the bay area, andrew barrientos was want toured moments before he was about to cross the border into mexico. amy hollyfield has more. reporter: oakland police asked authorities to close the border when they figured out he was headed that way, and authorities did that. they were searching every car. and a police officer found him just before he got there. andrew barrientos and an accomplice were at a parking lot at the last u.s. exit when a san diego police sargeant spotted their car. the suspect was in the vehicle, identified himself as being the suspect in the shooting of the officer in oakland help was armed. he had a pistol in miss waist waned that was loaded. reporter: police all over the state and especially at the border were looking for the known gang member. we asked the border patrol and the san diego prognos

fremont police officers refused to leave one of their own. the cars remain outside highland hospital. doctors are doing everything they can. he s required some surgery. he s going to require more surgery. i d actually urge the public to donate blood if possible. had to trans fuse him extensively. the officer joined fremont police six years ago after spending 15 years at the newark police department. the officer is with the south alameda major crimes task force. he was serving a warrant for the dea when he was shot. this task force deals with the most danger rules folks, the high-end drug dealers and the gangster and that kind of stuff and they re in a tough neighborhood in oakland so it s even more dangerous. he s a pretty tough guy, a good cop. which is why the police are confident the husband and father will pull through. he has to. the thought of losing him isn t an option for this department. there s a lot of trauma on the department, psychological trauma caus

a mandatory booster shot could be the next step in trying to control california s whooping cough epidemic. 200 yew cases reported in just the past week fueling outbreak fears as kids go back to school. vicky nguyen joins with us that story. jess, it would be up to the state health department but leaders at county level say the a reasonable option. the current law only requires students entering kinder gartden to have proof of vaccinations unless parents file for an exemption. but because the vaccine wears off by first or second grade, leaders say mandating booster shots could help prevent future outbreaks. reporter: cassandra brown joins her big brother at school tomorrow. and the kindergartner has the boo-boos to show for it after three vac nations today to comply with california s school imizatimunization law. this nanny says she s followed the news of the epidemic closely. when an infant died. reporter: so far this year eight babies all under 3 months have died. 33

city officials say when first installed two years ago waits to catch drivers who blew through red lights. we never intend a righthand turn. a report indicates two cameras have not had much of an impact. there hasn t been a significanty decrease. city councilman ina bane its not improving traffic safety. a recent grand jury report questions whether or not the kramz are more successful as cash cows for those cities that operate them. and they should be did safety, not money. this lawyer bruce simon filed a lawsuit last week against two companies that installed red light cameras in the county. simon says they re violating state law, including a so called cost neutral pro vision in the contracts. he says that the camera makers reimburse cities when they can t make enough from tickets to pay for operational costs. can t be for them. the companies will makeup the difference and picking intersections which are going to be susceptible to tickets. and there have been
