IBM Says It's Made a Big Breakthrough in Quantum Computing

Scientists at IBM say they've developed a method to manage the unreliability inherent in quantum processors, providing a long awaited breakthrough in making quantum computers more practical than conventional ones. This advancement, detailed in a study published in the journal Nature, comes nearly four years after Google eagerly declared "quantum supremacy" when its scientists claimed […]

New technique in error-prone quantum computin

Today's quantum computers often calculate the wrong answer because of noisy environments that interfere with the quantum entanglement of qubits. IBM Quantum has pioneered a technique that accounts for the noise to achieve reliable results. They tested this error mitigation strategy against supercomputer simulations run by UC Berkeley physicists, and for the hardest calculations, the quantum computer bested the supercomputer. This is evidence for the utility of today's noisy quantum computers for performing real-world calculations.

New technique in error-prone quantum computing makes classical computers sweat

Despite steady improvements in quantum computers, they re still noisy and error-prone, which leads to questionable or wrong answers. Scientists predict that they won t truly outcompete today s "classical" supercomputers for at least five or ten years, until researchers can adequately correct the errors that bedevil entangled quantum bits, or qubits.
