McNeal, Gross Take Podium For Ste Gen

By Editor | March 17, 2021 By ERIC X. VICCARO EVICCARO@STEGENHERALD.COM INDEPENDENCE For Ste. Genevieve High School 126-pound senior Dalton McNeal, this marked the end of a glorious road. Meanwhile, the journey is only beginning for Dragon 106-pound freshman Gage Gross. Both Gross and McNeal earned fourth-place medals at the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 Tournament on Thursday, March 11, at Cable Dahmer Arena. McNeal produced a stellar record of 36-7 during the 2020-21 campaign, and he finished his scholastic career with a 133-45 mark. “I am very proud of how Dalton ended his season,” Ste. Genevieve head coach Jared Bonnell said. “I only wished he could have ended it the way he wanted, as a state champion. I know he gave everything he had.”

Camels Dash Warrior Dreams

By ERIC X. VICCARO EVICCARO@STEGENHERALD.COM The Valle Catholic High School boys’ basketball team’s dream of playing in Springfield this week didn’t come true. Campbell, a squad with more depth and overall scorers than Valle Catholic, downed the Warriors 68-61 in a Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 quarterfinal game on Friday here in Ste. Genevieve. The Warriors finished the season with a 20-9 record; meanwhile, Campbell (23-4) will play Norwood at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Class 2 state semifinals at JQH Arena. “Campbell finished some shots around the rim and seemed to have an answer on the offensive end most of the night,” Valle Catholic head coach Tyler Search said. “They are also good when they have a lead late in games.”

An Even Dozen For The Dragons

By Editor | February 16, 2021 By ERIC X. VICCARO PARK HILLS Smell that. That’s the aroma of home cooking in the very near future for the Ste. Genevieve High School boys’ wrestling squad. Twelve of 14 Dragons advanced to sectionals based off of top-3 performances at the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 District 1 Tournament this past Saturday at Central High School’s Foulon Field House. The Dragons also claimed their ninth district championship under award-winning head coach Jared Bonnell. “I’m really happy,” Bonnell said. “We had 12 wrestling in the finals, and we’re happy to have four champions.” The Dragon program has lofty standards, and the coach said some of the wrestlers thought they were mentally tight and others might have been too aggressive taking chances with their shots.
