LOS ANGELES - Chloé Zhao has made history at the 2021 Academy Awards, becoming the first woman of colour to win best director and just the second woman to win the award.
Zhao won the directing Oscar for â Nomadland,â joining Kathryn Bigelow, who won in 2009 for âThe Hurt Locker.â
âI'm extremely lucky to be able to do what I love for a living," she said backstage. âThis win means more people get to live their dreams. I'm extremely grateful."

A seemingly unimpressed Daniel cautiously made his way over to David, leaving Sunrise anchors Natalie Barr and Matt Doran stunned.
But after getting side-tracked on the red carpet, the British actor hesitated, prompting Matt, 37, to urge David to 'play the Australian card' again.
Shout out: The network's US correspondent was standing in the media pit when he spotted Daniel Kaluuya (pictured) making his way down the red carpet
'Dan! Dan... You are live on air in Australia at the moment,' David continued as Daniel stepped up to the microphone that had been set up on the red carpet.

The 93rd Academy Awards held Sunday offered a few historic moments, as Chloé Zhao became the first Chinese woman and the first woman of color to be awarded Best Director for her work on "Nomadland," which also took Best Picture.
Zhao beat out Emerald Fennell, nominated for "Promising Young Woman," marking the first time two women were nominated in the directing category. "Nomadland" was only the second film directed by a woman to be named Best Picture.

While audiences watched a host of stars collect their coveted prizes and put on memorable performances at the 93rd Academy Awards, there was also plenty of action going on away from the glare of TV cameras.
Backstage at the show, which this year was held at Downtown Los Angeles' Union Station amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a host of celebrities were seen letting their hair down in candid fashion as they stepped offstage.
Reese Witherspoon was seen beaming broadly as she posed for a series of selfies before a large cabinet of shiny golden Oscar statuettes, after presenting one of the awards on the night.

Sunday night saw the much-awaited ceremony for the 93rd Academy Awards, which —- after being delayed due to pandemic restrictions and switching venues — finally gathered the industry’s finest to award this year’s top prizes. The first two hours of the show went by fairly unremarkably — from the best documentary win onwards there was controlled chaos — and not just because of the winners. Though Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” nabbed the top prizes, including best director, best picture and best actress, at this year’s Oscars, it was just as much about who didn’t win as who did.
