More than 250 earthquakes hit Kansas in 2020
There were more than 250 earthquakes in Kansas last year, with a flurry in central Kansas — and a strong quake in December near Wichita — that led to an investigation into the possible causes.
That investigation, by the Kansas Corporation Commission, looked at fracking — a practice by the oil industry used to bring crude to the surface. Ultimately, the KCC determined that did not cause the tremors felt throughout south-central Kansas.
“Based on our investigation, KCC staff does not believe the seismicity in Wichita, Kansas, is tied to any oil and gas activities in the area,” said Ryan A. Hoffman, director of the KCC Conservation Division.

Dec. 30—One of two earthquakes Wednesday morning was the largest in a recent series of quakes and the 32nd strongest in Kansas data, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.
Based on historical data, KGS senior scientist Rick Miller said the magnitude of any approaching earthquakes shouldn't be much higher than Wednesday's record earthquake. That's if there are any additional earthquakes in the near future at all. He believes the 18 quakes to hit Wichita recently are a natural event that will subside once the suspected fault causing them has released its built-up energy. Wednesday's earthquakes included a 3.9 magnitude one at 5:04 a.m. east of Greenwich between Central and Douglas and a 2.0 magnitude one at 5:23 a.m. with an epicenter just north of Towne East Square.

3.8 quake 30 Dec 5:04 am (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred only 19 minutes ago 5 miles east of Wichita, Kansas, United States, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the epicenter near Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, USA, early morning on Wednesday 30 December 2020 at 5:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8 as well.
