From 1am tomorrow people who arrive in Queensland after visiting Victorian COVID-19 exposure sites will be forced into hotel quarantine. It comes as Victoria fights to detect and contain community transmission.
And in this week’s federal budget, the government has committed to welcoming back over 17,000 Australians stranded overseas over the next year, which will likely place more pressure on our hotel quarantine system.
In light of the seemingly continued spillover of hotel quarantine infections into the community, one researcher raised an intriguing possibility online: should we vaccinate all arrivals on day one of their stay in hotel quarantine?
There may be reasonably high vaccination rates among our arrivals already. But, if not, it’s definitely something worth thinking about.
In my view, overseas travellers should be considered equivalent to frontline workers, as they traverse the routes into Australia and cross through border quarantine. Therefore, they could be included in phase 1a of the vaccine rollout alongside these frontline workers.

COVID-19: Nepal bans all domestic, international flights

Nepal on Sunday banned all domestic
flights from Monday midnight and all international flights from Wednesday midnight until May 14 amid a surge in
COVID-19 cases.
"The decision on flight restrictions are in place until May 14," Health Minister Hridayesh Tripathi told the Kathmandu Post. "However, charter flights will be allowed."
Nepal has also made quarantine mandatory for everyone arriving in the country.
Foreigners flying into the Kathmandu Valley are subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine in hotels upon arrival. A negative polymerase chain reaction test result obtained within 72 hours prior to departure from the country of origin is required for entry into Nepal.
