Old Smoke Band Finds Purpose, New Dynamic During Pandemic

Like many bands, the Bloomington-based quintet Old Smoke used downtime during the pandemic to write and record a new album. The EP “Onward” is musically similar to Old Smoke’s 2018 rockin’-blues LP “In My Own Time.” But this time around, background singer Jessica Wheet moved to lead vocals. Guitarist and former lead singer Adam Humphreys said Wheet up-front changed the dynamic of the band for two reasons. “She has a huge range, so that changes the kinds of songs that we can do,” said Humphreys via Zoom.

ON MY OWN TIME

The Springfield Area Arts Council (SAAC) announced April 20 the return of a biennial art exhibit that encourages workers to showcase their creativity. Participating businesses, government agencies, educational and medical entities will encourage their employees to showcase their artwork. "On My Own Time is one of the best ways to bring employees together. They learn that those they work with daily also are creative on their own time through artistic endeavors after hours," said program coordinator Rosemary Buffington in a news release. The program reveals "hidden talent" and "it is good for the community to know that so much artistic ability resides here," said Sheila Walk, SAAC executive director, in the release. Artists can submit drawings, paintings, fiber and needlework, photography, pottery and other forms of media. The deadline for organizations to sign up for participation is May 14. Share this article: It’s become a cliché, even for post-Baby Boomers, to look back wistfully on the early ’70s as some kind of untouchable golden age for popular music. But when you survey all the era’s best albums in list form, it’s hard not to trust that instinct. I mean… holy shit. In 1971, the psychedelic era hadn’t completely wilted; prog was nearing its popularity apex; Motown was still a revolutionizing soul music; the folk-rock movement was in full flight. The possibilities were limitless. You know it’s a banner year when 50 albums don’t begin to scratch the surface — when both John Lennon and Paul McCartney release definitive LPs and neither make the top 10. Was 1971 the greatest album year ever? We’ll save that debate for another time (or maybe another list).

"On Your Own Time" adds to an already strong year of releases for the Bend producer/musician Sometimes you hear a voice for the first time that immediately latches on to you—one that you can't help but be thoroughly impressed by. It's not something that happens every day, nor can you quite predict when it will happen, but it happened when I first heard a KENZI song. Based in Bend, KENZI is the musical project of Spencer Mackenzie Brown, originally born in Kansas. A Central Oregon resident for the past seven months (he first moved to Oregon in 2016, with stops in Hawaii and the East Coast in between), Brown happily calls Bend home.
