COVID Cases on Cape Causing Concern – NBC Boston

The Cape, ironically, also has the most people vaccinated in the state because of its older population. Dr. William Hanage, an associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard, says this doesn’t mean people can let their guard down. “Unfortunately people think that just having a lot of people vaccinated or being leaders in vaccination means you cannot have outbreaks, that’s not true, he said. Not true until you get to a lot of people being vaccinated. When I say a lot of people, I mean roughly 80-percent.” Residents hope this is the last spike. “I don’t think it should be a deterrent personally because if you’re taking precautions and everything like why is it any different anywhere else,” Michelle Bailey said.

Officials say contagious COVID variant from Bazil found in Michigan as cases surge

Officials say contagious COVID variant from Brazil found in Michigan as cases surge P1 Variant identified in Bay County resident Updated:  Tags:  The COVID-19 variant detected in Brazil has been identified in Bay County. That variant is known as the P1 strain and it is more contagious and more than 50% able to reinfect. “Like the other variants, we are seeing it is more transmissible meaning it’s more contagious,” said Lynn Sutfin with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. MORE: The person infected in Bay County and the people they’ve been in contact with will need to quarantine for 14 days. It’s unclear what effect, if any, it will have on those, including seniors, who have already been vaccinated as there isn’t enough research to know exactly.

Chinese vaccine CoronaVac might prove ineffective against Brazil's P1 COVID-19 variant: Study

Chinese vaccine CoronaVac might prove ineffective against Brazil s P1 COVID-19 variant: Study ANI | Updated: Mar 11, 2021 17:03 IST Sao Paulo [Brazil], March 11 (ANI): Amid an aggressive spread of the new COVID-19 strain from the Amazon in Brazil, a recent preliminary study has provided evidence that China s CoronaVac, the country s principal vaccine, might prove ineffective against the coronavirus variant. According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the small-scale study comes as doctors have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in Brazil over the coming weeks, with rising deaths and infections overwhelming the hospitals in the country. The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, was designed to test how antibodies created either by vaccination or by previous infections from other versions of COVID-19 respond when faced with the new strain.
