All honorary doctors have been relieved from their duties after they submitted their resignations. Dr Lahane, meanwhile, has also been sacked as the ‘coordinator’ of Maharashtra’s Preventable Blindness Free Mission.
The hospital dean, Dr Pallavi Saple, has sought an explanation from Dr Parekh, on the appointment of Dr Sumeet Lahane, the son of Dr Lahane, who was allowed to perform surgeries in the department.
The strike, called by Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) also raised concern about the issue of unpaid stipends and arrears of the previous two batches.
According to the committee's report submitted to the dean, it was revealed that the junior resident doctors were lacking basic cataract surgery training.
The junior residents contended that the monopoly of the ophthalmologists against whom the complaint has been filed needs to be urgently addressed to restore the academic environment in the department which is essential for resident doctors to be trained.
