Glamping, Airstreams, yurts and a caboose: How to reserve the coolest lodgings in Arizona

Glamping, Airstreams, yurts and a caboose: How to reserve the coolest lodgings in Arizona Roger Naylor After a year of being cooped up, make this the summer you lay your head someplace new and different. Make this the summer you sleep weird. There’s nothing wrong with traditional vacations, but life is too short to always stay in square hotel rooms. If your tastes run beyond the ordinary, you have plenty of quirky options to choose from in Arizona. Snooze in a caboose, a yacht, a wigwam or a swanky tent. Hike to a backcountry yurt. Get your kicks on Route 66. Invite your neighbors over for a swinging cocktail party. Watch wildebeests graze during breakfast.

Paradise Found?

Paradise Found? Copy link Copy link By Pallabi Munsi and Nick Fouriezos It’s an epic sort of poetry, one of longing, temptation, needs met and dreams deferred. No, we’re not talking about Milton. This is the modern race to find, and define, the paradises of tomorrow. If that seems melodramatic, perhaps you haven’t been awake this past year, when the way the world is designed became more crucial than ever. Join this trip into the near future, of giant jellyfish and oxygenating parking garages, of mass surveillance but also improved safety, of cities on stilts or maybe even in the clouds.

Future Cities: From Le Corbusier's Radiant City to the Dutch "Breathing City 2050"

Copy Throughout history, religious reformers and visionary starchitects have attempted to envision the future of our cities: from the Venetian model city of Palmanova to the multi-story housing complex for 5,000 people drafted by Italian architect Paolo Soleri, from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacre City to Le Corbusier’s Radiant City, numerous masterplans have been crafted to illustrate some of the most unprecedented ambitions. Two figures from The Radiant City that display Le Corbusier’s worldview: he strongly opposes commercial household decorations.. Image Courtesy of Le Corbusier,1964 Today, people have never stopped investigating new approaches to urban planning that may enable a smooth transition towards a future green economy. In 2018, Dutch governments and knowledge institutions initiated the “2050

In its 23rd year, SF Indiefest is stronger than ever

. Marin native Hopper Penn (son of Robin Wright and Sean Penn) stars alongside Paz de la Huerta in Puppy Love, which closes out SF Indiefest this February. In its 23rd year, SF Indiefest is stronger than ever By Jan 26, 2021 The 2021 San Francisco Independent Film Festival, aka Indiefest, features a smattering of Bay Area cinematic talent among its 80 independent films. Here are a few to watch. Oakland filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes will be awarded this year s Vanguard Award for his hybrid documentary/fiction piece, 499, that follows a 16th Century conquistador on a modern-times journey through Mexico where he travels from the countryside to bustling cities seeking out relatives of murdered activists and detailing the effects of colonialism and dehumanization on societies. The dream-like cinematography earned Reyes the Best Cinematography Award at Tribeca Film Festival last year. SF IndieFest prides itself on recognizing unconventional, risk-taking filmmakers

First modern arcology project

1970 Providing an alternative to modern urban sprawl, Italian-American architect Paolo Soleri’s (1919-2013) arcology concept was developed in the 1960s and aims at a more balanced relationship between urban form and efficiency of performance within a unique conception of the modern city. Construction of the first prototype arcology town, named Arcosanti (referring to architecture before things ), began in the central Arizona desert, 110 km (70 mi) north of Phoenix, in 1970. Built to test the validity of the new city model, the ongoing construction, research work and educational provision at Arcosanti explores low-energy and resource use, the intensification of space and land use, and self-containment of habitat. It is often lauded as one of the earliest attempts to build an eco-city.
