While Labor stopped taking donations from the tobacco industry in 2004 and the Liberals followed suit a decade later, the Nationals continue to accept donations from the tobacco industry.
Australian Electoral Commission data shows that since the 1998–99 financial year, tobacco giant Philip Morris has donated $613,608 to the Nationals. The company is also a top-tier member of the Nationals, paying a $55,000 membership fee last financial year, which entitled the company to a program of boardroom access and high level lobbying opportunities.
Ben Franklin MLC disavows any connection with this arrangement, saying he is a member of the Nationals’ state branch that does not receive tobacco company largesse. But where does this leave Kevin Hogan, Federal Member for Page?

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to
launch another investigation into complaints that sheriff’s deputies harass relatives of people who have been killed by law enforcement.
The decision came on the same day the National Lawyers Guild of Los Angeles released a
new report detailing claims of “aggressive and continuous” harassment by deputies of two families.
The report lists allegations from relatives of 21-year-old Anthony Vargas, who was fatally shot by deputies in 2018, and 18-year-old Paul Rea, killed by deputies in 2019.
In the case of the Vargas family, “LASD patrol cars drive slowly past family members’ homes or park outside their homes on an almost daily basis, a phenomenon that only arose after Anthony’s death,” according to the report.

The LA sheriffâs department (LASD), which has faced national scrutiny for its corruption scandals and killings of young Black and Latino men, has routinely retaliated against victimsâ relatives who speak out, the groups said in the report released on Tuesday.
The authors collected detailed accounts of alleged harassment from the families of Paul Rea, an 18-year-old killed during a traffic stop in 2019, and Anthony Vargas, a 21-year-old shot 13 times in 2018. The report, also produced by Black Lives Matter LA and Centro Community Service Organization, alleges:
LASD deputies regularly drive by or park in front of the Rea and Vargas familiesâ homes and workplaces and at times have taken photos or recorded them for no reason.
