Chautauqua County may create a licensing scheme in order to better regulate businesses that sell tobacco and vaping products.
During a recent Human Services Committee meeting, county lawmakers discussed ways to address smoking, especially among young people.
According to Lynn Schaffer with the county law department, county governments cannot raise taxes on cigarettes, but it can create a licensing scheme, as long as revenue made from the licensing goes back to smoking enforcement.
“The licensing scheme would basically be a local law that sets up essentially a permit program for vendors and retailers, where they would file for a permit with the county and then depending on how you want to set this up … that unit would set up a permit that would be associated with a fee,” she said. “People would apply for the permit or fee the same way our campgrounds apply for a permit or fees, or tattoo parlors apply for a permit or a fee, which would be based

The chairman of Chautauqua County’s Democratic Party is firing back against criticism leveled by the Chautauqua County Legislature’s five Democrat members.
Chuck Nazzaro, D-Jamestown and legislature Democratic minority leader, said in a letter sent to The Post-Journal and other media outlets late Tuesday night that the Democratic Legislative Caucus had planned to stay silent on the issue of Green’s successor until after a decision had been made in a lawsuit filed by Green and Luz Torres, Green’s choice to be the next Democratic election commissioner, against the legislature last week.

What were Chautauqua County legislators thinking last week when they proposed appointing Loren Kent as the next Democratic election commissioner?
We aren’t quibbling with Kent’s qualifications, nor are we opposing the appointment of the Luz Torres, the Dunkirk resident chosen for the post by the county Democratic Party.
Our issue is with the flagrant disregard for taxpayers shown by the legislature’s five Democrats Charles Nazzaro, Robert Whitney, Paul Whitford, all of Jamestown, Robert Bankoski of Dunkirk and Christine Starks of Fredonia who introduced the resolution for legislative action and put county taxpayers on the hook for a lawsuit over internal Democratic Party infighting.
