The Pekin City Council voted to adopt the city’s Fiscal Year 2021-2022 operating and capital improvements budget during Monday’s meeting, and also spent more than an hour debating changes to city garbage collection rules.
“This budget was put together taking into consideration the lasting impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, state funding, new legislation, as well as other factors from the community,” Pekin City Manager Mark Rothert said.
According to Rothert, the city anticipates General Fund expenditures of over $29.4 million, and capital improvement expenditures of over $37 million.
After a lengthy discussion, the budget ordinance passed by a 4-3 margin. Council members Lloyd Orrick, Rick Hilst, and Dave Nutter cast the dissenting votes.

Goofy Ridge
Let s start with the town that actually has humor in its name. According to Wikipedia, the area was originally called The Ridge, a camp near the river bank. After some serious drinking one night, a local game warden said he wasnât too drunk to shoot a walnut off the head of a volunteer. Naturally, someone was drunk enough to volunteer. The game warden placed the tiny target on the volunteerâs head, aimed his .22 rifle, and shot the nut right off.
