Oldham MP claims Government Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill is poorly thought-out Date published: 17 March 2021
Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams
Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, has spoken in the Commons about her opposition to the Government’s Policing, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, including poorly thought-out measures to impose disproportionate controls on free expression and the right to protest.
Debbie said: “The Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill is a missed opportunity. Some measures, such as the Police Covenant, doubling the sentence for assaulting emergency workers and toughening sentencing for death by dangerous driving, I support. But several others including the proposed changes to the right to peaceful protest and on unauthorised encampments targeted at gypsy, Roma and other travelling communities, I have concerns about.

Pi represented by the Greek letter π is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14159 (hence the 14th day of the third month 3/14).
In 2017, Pi Day was celebrated at the Monroe Correctional Center in Washington state, where prisoners who were math enthusiasts were joined by mathematicians. It was the first event organized by the Prison Mathematics Project (PMP), an organization started by Christopher Havens to share his passion for math with fellow inmates.
This year, the PMP’s Pi Day celebrations will be virtual with mathematicians from all over the world coming together and sharing their knowledge and passion with a growing community of prisoners who love mathematics.

Covid-19 measures were introduced in Irish prisons last year to prevent the spread of the virus, including a reduction in prisoner numbers and cell-sharing.
The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) said that addressing the overcrowding in prisons in a short period of time was an “extraordinary achievement”.
There were sometimes two prisoners sleeping on beds and one on the floor.

Before the outbreak of the pandemic, 75 prisoners were sleeping on mattresses on the floor because of a lack of space.
