went. just a couple of quick thoughts. first of all we're going to talk about arizona gun laws let's talk about it. arizona you can't give a mentally ill person a gun. it's called the prohibited possessor. it's part of the law. if there's a person who presents a danger to themselves or someone else pursuant to a court order, they can't get a firearm. so, no, the laws haven't been loosened. then let's talk about the gun culture as being respect of just republicans. harry reid almost won an nra endorsement over sharon age in nevada. the nra took so much heat for it it split conservatives in two and it actually drove a lot of people to leave the nra for the gun owners of america. he did photo ops at a huge gun range in nevada and -- >> you feel nothing needs to change in gun laws in the united states? >> i think that there needs to be something different in terms of reporting people like this instance with jared lee loughner. if he had been reported and they had a court order he wouldn't have been able to go in there. you don't change the laws you be more alert and aware.

with his background get a gun and bullets in the first place? joining me now is andy hill a retired sergeant with the phoenix police department. andy, answer that question. how does a guy with his background, a guy who told the army recruiters he uses marijuana allegedly, a guy who was asked to leave pima community college because people were scared about what he might do, that just doesn't register on the radar if you're going to buy a gun or ammunition, am i correct? >> you're absolutely right, ali. as a matter of fact, the truth of the matter is anybody can get a gun if they want to legally or illegally in this country but for him unless you are a prohibited possessor or a flag is raised that comes into the sights of law enforcement or somewhere in public safety or the medical profession, that person will not be refused buying a weapon or the magazine or the bullets or even the extended magazine now as the law permits in this country. >> is there some sense in the discussion, andy, that maybe the group of people who fit into
being a prohibited possessor, somebody who can't get a gun under the laws should be expanded to deal with people who may have some other trouble and possibly mental illness? >> i think that is a very valid question and a good point especially for law enforcement or any other first responders. they're usually the ones whether at the hospital or the police officers or the firefighters or people at shelters, they come in first contact with people that may have mental illnesses. not that the suspect in this case has those issues. but what we need to do is probably think about how can we mitigate or minimize some of the risk by addressing those flags when they come up, a place to report them to? sometimes a police officer can have somebody with a mental order of detention be evaluated but it's for a short period of time but there is something that needs to be looked at. unfortunately in this country mental illness tends to be looked at in a different way. it doesn't get all the resources it needs but certainly is a valid issue to discuss. >> let's talk about the magazine on this gun. he apparently had a glock 19 that had a 31-round capacity, a
loughner got a gun unusual to you? >> well, ali in america it's not unusual for anybody to be able to get a gun and bullets. it's a fact of life that either you can get one legally or illegally. as far as the suspect, he got one legally. he was not a prohibited possessor. which means he didn't have a felony conviction in the state of arizona or on his record. that would have prohibited him getting that weapon or the extended magazine he used. >> when you go buy a gun it's often instant, but there's a check that goes through. i guess it checks against the national database. which should alert someone if this man had a record of having some sort of mental illness. the fact that he was asked to leave pima community college, withdrew of his own volition after concern about mental illness, that wouldn't have made it onto that federal database that is checked when you go buy a gun, am i correct? >> that's correct. they're really two distinct and separate issues between your
charges could be expected at state court as to the other victims? >> yes, i know there are discussions between the united states attorney and the district attorney in terms of how you would outline these charges, and i think it's -- i would defer to them in terms of what charges are being brought or charges that are brought either in federal or state court down the road. yes, ma'am, in the back? >> yesterday the sheriff mentioned something about a second person injured being 15 years old. is that no longer the case? >> i think the facts, and correct me if i'm wrong, sheriff, but -- >> i don't know where you heard that, but we did say there was a 9-year-old girl that had been shot and was deceased. where that information that you're talking about yesterday came from, i have no knowledge. >> a 15-year-old, that's not -- >> that's not correct, no. >> let me go right -- yes, ma'am, right here. >> arizona news radio. is loughner considered to be, was he a prohibited possessor at
the iranians have to realize that we are serious. we cannot afford for the iranians to mock us and defy us. and to sit there and just be speculators and reviewers of what iran does. so far the world has talked the talk. it's time for it to walk the walk. i think iran must realize the military option is on the table, that they are playing with fire. the world will not accept, will not agree to live in a horribly dangerous and ugly world in which iran is the possessor of nuclear weapons and makes it available to terror organizations whether it's hezbollah, hamas or al qaeda or others. this is the world we'll live in if iran across quiers those weapons. nobody wants to live in that world. the united states and its allies need to make it clear that time is up. the diplomatic clock has ticked
