258
On Thursday, Lithuania is marking the 31st anniversary of declaring independence from the Soviet Union.
Lithuania's Supreme Council-Reconstituent Seimas declared independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990.
Estonia and Latvia followed in August 1990, with the Baltic states becoming the first countries to declare independence from the USSR.
The Soviets attempted to restore control in January 1991, leaving dozens dead in Vilnius and Riga. However, the bloodshead marked a turning point in the move for the three countries' independence.
Iceland then became the first country to recognise the independence of Lithuania in February 1991.
