ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 4.16.21

By Keefer Apr 16, 2021 1944 - On shore leave from the Merchant Marines, Woody Guthrie arrived at Folkway Records' studios in New York City, where he started recording. Among the songs during these sessions was "This Land Is Your Land," which became an iconic populist protest anthem, covered by artists including Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen. 1956 - Chuck Berry recorded "Roll Over Beethoven" which was released by Chess Records the following month. It is said that Berry wrote the song in response to his sister Lucy always using the family piano to play classical music when Berry wanted to play pop music. The lyric "roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news" refers to how classical composers would roll over in their graves upon hearing that classical music had given way to rock and roll.

Applications Being Accepted for Louis Stout Memorial Scholarships for 20-21

When former Commissioner Louis Stout passed away in 2012, his widow Anna directed that donations on his behalf go to the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. She felt this was a chance for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service and community service. The award process for 2020-2021 is now underway. Applications are being accepted for students to apply for those awards through Sunday, February 28, 2021. The award winners will be announced in conjunction with the boys’ state basketball tournament in March. Two grants, each in the amount of a one-time scholarship of $2,000 payable to an institution of higher learning, will be awarded. The scholarship is not renewable and is not endowed for expansion. Minimum criteria is a 3.5 (converted to 4.0 scale) grade point average; involvement in varsity sports or sport-activities; involvement in other school activities, a record of community service/involvement and a member of the 2020-2021 senior class.

Chama's First Mayor Celebrates 100th Birthday

Special to the SUN     Eddie Esteban Vigil Jr., Chama’s first mayor, on Dec. 26 turned 100. It’s been 52 years since he held that position.     He now lives in Albuquerque with his daughter Linda, and his wife of 73 years, Luz Gallegos-Vigil.     His son Ernest Vigil, the youngest among 10 children, stood outside the Chama Chevron on a recent December day, and said, “My dad was the luckiest man in the world.”     Ernest sat in his vintage Full Moon trailer office as he recounted his father’s start.     Eddie’s luck started when the head nun at the Tierra Amarilla School sent him home and told him not to come back, “without a parent.”
