How the NCAA's new transfer rules are changing recruiting and creating chaos in college basketball

There is havoc in men’s college basketball, a diaspora of players leaving programs that shows no sign of ending soon.
Roughly one out of every three players who donned a uniform this past season has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal. That’s over 1,600 players, enough to field about 120 teams, and some believe that number could still swell to double the total from a year ago when the portal had over 1,000 entrants for the first time.
The reasons are clear: the NCAA’s decision in October to grant an extra year of eligibility to all current student-athletes, coupled with a more recent ruling that allows players to transfer one time without penalty. While the rule changes were meant to benefit student-athletes, they have created chaos.

Boston College sophomore forward CJ Felder announced today on Twitter that he plans to transfer to the University of Florida for the next academic year.
Felder was one of the most promising members of the Eagles’ roster during a very bad year that saw BC at the bottom of the ACC standings with only 2 conference wins. He averaged almost 10 points per game and shot .459 from the floor, good for the 2nd best shooting percentage on the team behind only Steffon Mitchell. His blocked shots were far and away the best on the team, as Felder averaged over 2 blocks per game. He will be a great addition for Florida as an inside scorer with good ball-control and great defensive instincts.

Marek Dolezaj shoved Rich Kelly back, creating a glimmer of space, and called for the ball. In the early minutes of the second half of Syracuse’s game on Saturday, the Orange had built a six-point lead against an undermanned Boston College team, and Dolezaj returned to hover by his spot near the foul line and high post.
After receiving a pass from Buddy Boeheim, Dolezaj squared up Kelly and spun his way toward the basket, floating his shot off the backboard to extend SU’s lead to 43-35. That same move, that same look from the high post, had led to so many other Syracuse baskets throughout the 2020-21 season, floating crosscourt passes to guards on the opposite wings or initiating post-ups for Quincy Guerrier on the blocks.

In a season where he’s already had several memorable blocks, Alan Griffin’s swat with 42 seconds left against BC likely won’t resonate as much as it should.
Boston College was cutting into Syracuse’s lead over the last two minutes, forcing two turnovers in the press — one by Buddy Boeheim and one by Marek Dolezaj. A Rich Kelly 3-pointer would’ve made it a one-possession game, but Griffin leaped and tipped it as Kelly released it.
