A severe storm started pounding north-central Wisconsin Wednesday evening, leading to tornado warnings, thunderstorms, half-dollar-sized hail, and high winds.
At 9:35 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for northeast Portage County until 9:45 p.m. after a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 12 miles northeast of Stevens Point.
This followed a tornado warning that was issued for Wausau, Weston and Rothschild in Marathon County that expired at 9:30 p.m.
The storm is also producing torrential rain and could lead to flash flooding, the National Weather Service said.
At 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for southeastern Portage County, as well as Winnebago, eastern Waushara, Waupaca and southwestern Outagamie counties until 11:15 p.m. That storm was carrying 60-mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

OCONTO – Looking at the horseshoe-shaped stand of trees behind Fairhaven Baptist Church, the Rev. Richard King tried to fathom just how 13 trees were snapped off around the perimeter.
“I don’t want to say it was a tornado,” King said Wednesday. “It looks something like a blender got into the backyard, dipped in and dipped out.”
“It had to be tremendous power,” gesturing toward a 3-foot-diameter tree broken off roughly 12 to 13 feet above the ground.
A storm hit late Monday night and early Tuesday, downing trees in scores of locations throughout Oconto County.
The county Sheriff’s Office received 35 reports of power lines downs from 12:15 a.m. Tuesday through that evening.
