A landowner who is stuck between a rock and a hard placeâactually between unbuildable acreage and a historic ox pathâcame to the zoning board of appeals this week hoping for relief.
Specifically, landowner Cary Casoli was seeking a variance from the ZBA that would allow him to separate a 7-acre piece of property on Route 6A into two lots.
Although it seemed like a simple request, the situation was far more complicated, Mr. Casoliâs attorney, Benjamin J. Losordo, told the ZBA members on Tuesday, May 25.
Two parcels, 209 Route 6A and 0 Route 6A, were merged in 2014 when Justice Resource Institute purchased the acreage with intentions to build a school for emotionally challenged kids.
Just ahead of the forsythia and daffodil blooms, Sandwich business owners are taking the first steps toward spring openings.
Plans for expanded outdoor seating, new signs and fences, and building renovations were among last weekâs presentations to the Sandwich Historic District Committeeâthe regulatory board that often is the first recipient of business news.
Fishermenâs View, a hugely popular seafood restaurant on Freezer Road that opened in 2016, is seeking permissions and permits to expand an outdoor seating area overlooking the canal.
Owner Robert Colbert told the HDC that he will add up to 36 more seats on a side patio covered with permeable pavers (to allow water to flow through, per a request from the conservation commission) and that the tables would be spaced at least six feet apart.

The Sandwich Historic District Committee this week happily removed a historic home from the list of properties slated for demolition.
âWeâve had an email from the applicant asking to withdraw the application for a demolition permit for 25 Water Street,â said HDC chairwoman Mary E. Foley. âThe house has been sold and is going to be renovated.â
Ms. Foley smiled and asked for a roll call vote on the matter, which took about a minute and was unanimous.
âThat was the easiest item on the agenda. Itâs wonderful news,â Ms. Foley said.
The vote was the first official announcement from a town board that the Water Street home, which was on the verge of destruction, had been rescued.

Boothbay blue is out and gray slate is in for the proposed senior housing complex at the former Henry T. Wing School.
In addition, portions of a building facing Water Street will be flanked with a red brick facade to blend more seamlessly with the original brick school building built in 1927.
That was the compromise worked out among members of the Sandwich Historic District Committee and the architect working on the $53 million downtown development.
âIâm not telling you that you have to do anything, but I would love to see the colors a little warmer,â said Mary E. Foley, chairman of the HDC. âThe blue popped out as awkward-looking.â
