Scarborough schools failed to follow policy in pulling book from 7th-grade curriculum

The Scarborough superintendent apologized Thursday for the decision district administrators made last week to remove a book about children with physical and emotional differences from the seventh-grade curriculum, saying the district failed to follow its policy for challenging materials.
Carrigain Rowan, 13, and her mother, Erin Rowan, seen at their home in Scarborough on Thursday, advocated for the removal of “Freak the Mighty” from the seventh-grade curriculum, saying that they disagreed with language in the book and that its themes perpetuate stereotypes about disabled people.
Falmouth opening schools to more students in March
The school committee also passed a resolution asking the state to push Maine teachers to the front of the vaccination line.

Superintendent Geoff Bruno said administrators are asking the state to prioritize Falmouth teachers for vaccinations, which will help staffing shortages created by educators quarantining after exposure to COVID-19.
