Chef Taiji Maruyama

What’s new?
Behind the scenes
Third generation sushi chef Taiji Maruyama – young, pony-tailed, chatty – is a new name to me, but he’s come up through top addresses: two Michelin star Ginza Kojyu in Tokyo, Nobu, and most recently the Japanese Grill at Surrey country house Beaverbrook. At 21 he was, I gather, one of the youngest chefs ever to get his blowfish license. Not terribly useful in Mayfair (or Surrey) but a fun fact nonetheless. Maru is sister restaurant to Taka in Marylebone, run by siblings Andrey and Anastasia Datsenko, both Tokyo-born-and-bred.

The climax of this weekâs television bonanza of police corruption was not âWho was H?â in Line of Duty. It was the three-part documentary on BBC2 called Bent Coppers. It was the more gripping because it was not fiction, it was a documentary. But the message was the same as Line of Dutyâs: no one in charge of the police really cared about corruption.
Bent Coppers told the story of Londonâs Metropolitan and City of London police in the 1960s and 70s. They took money from crooks almost from bottom to top. The source of payments was initially vice, pornography and bank robberies. Then, after the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act, the growth of the illicit drugs market led to corruption exploding.

If a part of London were ever to be crowned Queen of Romance, Mayfair would be it. The former home of Dame Barbara Cartland and the literary backdrop to Julia Quinn’s
Bridgerton (although the Netflix series was mostly filmed in Bath for Regency authenticity), it has witnessed love affairs, romps and liaisons as entrancing as any penned by either author.
Its very foundation rests on a wedding: the one between heiress Mary Davies and Sir Thomas Grosvenor, whose descendants would become the Dukes of Westminster. Their eldest son, Sir Richard, was the first to embark on a building programme that would turn an unremarkable estate into one London’s most fashionable addresses.

The longstanding interest that John le Carré (David Cornwell) maintained in Chechnya bore fruit in the novel Our Game, published in 1995, during the first Russian-Chechen war. I was delighted to help and intrigued when he âborrowedâ my home in Shepherd Market, central London, as the fictional safe house.
Davidâs Observer article Demons Dance As the West Watches (1994) detailed the plight of the Chechens: he was appalled by the human rights abuses then and in 1999-2000, when pro-independence Chechens were overwhelmed by Russian forces. In 2001 he joined in the founding of the UK charity MARCCH â Medical Aid and Relief for the Children of Chechnya. His misgivings were borne out shortly before his death when Britain imposed personal

The Mayfair Townhouse is a new hotel from the team behind Chewton Glen
Everyone in London lives in their own version of the city. Mine is a triangle, connected by Highbury Tube, Beigel Bake on Brick Lane and various bars in Hackney Wick â but away from all that I find myself most often in Mayfair. Itâs where meetings take place, and parties happen. Or used to. I make the journey on the Victoria Line to Green Park more often than any other, and the glow of the lettering spelling out THE RITZ on Piccadilly makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It feels like home.Â
