Sen. Cathy Osten: Economic aid for small towns needs a shot in the arm

A state program designed to help small communities launch key economic development projects has lost its way, according to one legislative leader who wants to revive it. The Small Town Economic Assistance Program, commonly known as STEAP, languished in political limbo from 2016 through most of 2020. When it reemerged last year, communities learned they couldn’t receive more than $128,205.

Seymour Selectmen Discuss Updates to 2021-22 Capital Plan

The board unanimously approved the updated 2021-22 capital plan. The plan contained new figures for project cost estimates and moved some projects to the next fiscal year. Of note, Chief of Staff Rory Burke said the Public Works dump truck replacement is now projected to begin next year. He said the transfer station scale now is now fully funded. Mr. Burke said the Gas Boy software, tanks and pumps, are in rough shape and when the system goes down, parts often have to be scavenged. Mr. Burke said the original job was estimated at $100,000; the updated estimate is now $185,000. To fully fund the project, the boards approved putting aside $92,500 this year and the next to fund it by 2022-23.
