Spring has emerged. Daffodils and crocuses are in bloom and lighter evenings entice us to think beyond the local. It is less than a month until holidays will be permitted within England, with the devolved administrations also beginning to ease travel restrictions.
Many will be ready to satiate a craving for adventure. Whether for day trips, weekend jaunts or longer breaks, history is our strongest tourism asset. One which, for now, we have all to ourselves.

A big ski area + a modern lift system + the finest accommodation and restaurants + a snow-sure record = the perfect ski resort, or does it?
Admit it, we’re all guilty of relying on the above equation, to varying extents, to help choose where to go on our next ski holiday – often bypassing resorts that don’t live up to our requirements on paper and returning to the same, or similar, destinations winter after winter. Little thought is given to what we could be missing out on in the resorts that appear to be lacking a piece of the puzzle.

Lockdown lethargy begone! We might not be able to get to our favourite yoga retreat in Ibiza this spring, sigh, but surely we can recreate a similar vibe in this lovely sea-view apartment in Scarborough. It just requires a positive mental attitude and some intention-setting before that visit to Whole Foods. So we’ve packed our NutriBullet, stocked up on Spirulina, hemp protein and bags of kale.
With five superfood-jammed smoothies a day, just think about how glowy and healthy we’ll be by Monday! And yes, we’ve checked the Wi-Fi speed is sufficient to get us through a 45-minute Yoga With Adriene session in the morning, right before our wheatgrass shots. At the moment, the luxury apartment smells faintly of Toilet Duck, but soon this will be replaced by the aroma of this Jo Malone Pomegranate and Black Pepper candle, and we’ll be swiftly transported to la isla bonita. Anyway, excuse us, we must bring in the Mexican blankets and our shakti mats from the car. Let’s get manifesting!
5. Best for food: Crete
Crete’s southerly location gives it the longest growing season in Greece, and it produces a surfeit of edible delights – you’ll even find avocados and bananas.
Heidi Fuller-Love says: "Variety is the spice of life on the largest Greek island. Crete, home of the Minotaur legend and birthplace of Europe’s first evolved society, is a vivid and sensual mosaic of contrasts: from lofty mountains and pink-sand beaches, to buzzing nightlife and traditional kafeneions (coffeehouses). Standing at the crossroads of three continents, the atoll described by Homer in his Odyssey as ‘a fair land... in the midst of the wine-dark sea’ has been invaded countless times over the centuries. The traces of successive invasions can be found in Turkish bathhouses, Venetian fortresses, and Byzantine architecture.
“I’m so grateful for the chance to discuss an issue I believe is often ignored and that is this one dimensional understanding of health,” she wrote. “How it’s used to shame others. How there is a distinct lack of diversity or support in ‘wellness spaces’ and how poorly fat people are treated in the name of health.”
A number of critical readers claimed the magazine was celebrating obesity by calling a range of body types healthy – many specifically referring to the relationship between obesity and COVID-19, reported The Independent.
“There’s nothing to celebrate about being obese in the middle of a pandemic, where you have a 70 per cent bigger chance of being ill with coronavirus if you are obese,” Piers Morgan said to a crowd Jan. 12 on “Good Morning Britain,” reported The Daily Mail.
