Extreme E kicks off with first all-electric off-road race in Saudi Arabian desert of Al-‘Ula

FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series Extreme E recently started with its inaugural race, called the Desert X Prix, in the Saudi Arabian desert of Al-‘Ula, showing the performance of battery-electric “Odyssey 21” racecar provided by Spark Racing Technology.
Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, CEO of the Bahrain International Automobile Circuit, affirmed that Saudi Arabia took the lead in organizing the first intercontinental electric SUV race in Al-Ula on Sunday, offering a wonderful competitive atmosphere because of the beauty of its nature.

Extreme E might be the wacky brainchild of Formula E founder Alejandro Agag, but there’s more to it than just some off-road racing in electric cars. A star-studded line-up of drivers and team owners, far-flung locations and a vision that goes out on a limb in terms of bringing environmentally friendly motorsport to the masses is all here in one place.

Can motorsport help save the world? It’s an unlikely proposition, but it’s one Extreme E is targeting. Here’s the pitch: take a grid of fully electric rally raid-style off-road buggies and transport them around the world to a series of wild and environmentally sensitive locations, including the Arctic, Brazilian rainforest, the Senegalese coast and Tierra Del Fuego on the southern tip of Argentina. The X Prix races will consist of qualifying, semifinal and final sprint races, run across two laps on an off-road track five miles long. Each team will field two drivers, one male, one female, and they’ll switch places mid-race at the end of the first lap (promoting gender equality in motorsport is another significant element).
