on this. and i don t think the white house is surprised that the assault weapons ban has been dropped and will be able to you know, people will be able to vote for it as a separate amendment. and i think lots of democrats, especially, again, those in those red states, will actually vote against the assault weapons ban. but they will support this bill in large part because of the background checks, because of the tightening of restrictions around gun trafficking. and i think you ll be able to get some republicans to support that, too. margie, you know, the senate s gun safety proposals, here are the proposals that are heading to a vote on the floor next month. gun trafficking and straw purchasing. expanding background checks. money for school security. magazines carrying more than ten rounds. assault weapons ban. these are things that are going to the floor either together or separately. did democrats sacrifice assault weapons in order to win support for these other measures? if so,

relatives of those shot to death in the aurora movie theater as the state considers a ban on high capacity magazines. but outside it was pro-gun activists who staged a protest against a series of gun control measures expected to reach the governor s desk by next month. goldie taylor is an msnbc contributor and managing editor of the goldie taylor project. all this activity comes as democratic senator pat lee hey and republican senator susan collins introduced a bill that would make gun trafficking a federal crime and crack down on straw purchasing. this is a rare bipartisan effort in the senate on guns and gabby giffords campaign comes as the judiciary committee takes up this bill and the assault weapons ban later this week. do you think this legislative activity is a positive sign that action on gun safety is coming? i think we will see some
them on all gun sales. what is the difference? we also last year, our legislature passed a straw purchasing to make the penalties stronger. i think now that we have that tool box set, i think the people of pennsylvania are ready to say, okay, we don t mind reporting our lost and stolen gun. that is really just a tool for prosecutors to make sure that straw purchasers, who make up 40% of all gun crimes in pennsylvania, are held accountable for their actions. it s gun trafficking. no one agrees with gun trafficking. so this are very common sense approaches that we can take. and just two weeks ago, we closed the florida loophole here in pennsylvania. and we received first a lot of e-mails saying we don t understand, why are you infringing on our gun rights. when explained to them what the florida loophole was, is that it allows people from pennsylvania who are denied permits to then apply into florida, even as nonresidents and get a gun permit, when we explain that to them, we had every s
