they re most vulnerable. that s what isis-k is trying to exploit with that kind of rocket attack. thank you so much. we re watching as this final the final moments of this operation tick down. thank you so much. joining me for more is the senator there were as many as five rockets fired at the kabul airport overnight. what s your reaction to that? it s very clear that the threat level remains very high in the final moments of our evacuation process. and that s exactly what we heard from the pentagon briefing today. the way they put it is that the threat stream is still real, active, and in many cases, very specific. you wanted the president to extend past the august 31st deadline in order to get more people out, more americans, more afghan allies. does this very clear and present danger we now see this threat
that threat there are ongoing threat streams. biden was warned there could be an attack on the airport in 24-36 hours. we have seen that attack at least the five rockets. but again i m told from senior military officials that the threat stream continues and it will continue until the u.s. yous out on august 31. ashley: that will make it difficult for the around 300 americans left in afghanistan if they want to leave afghanistan. that number of americans is a tricky figure. as the 8 department reached out to some of those 300 or so americans that are left. some of them indicated they would prefer to stay.
the u.s. carried out a drone strike in kabul to eliminate an imminent threat believed to be a suicide bomber. the strike inadvertently killed as many as ten afghan civilians, including six children. the pentagon suggested that the civilian casualties are because of secondary blasts because of explosives in the terrorist s car. they say they will investigate the matter. overnight five rockets were fired at the airport in kabul. only one made it inside the perimeter. it caused no damage, we re told. isis-k has claimed responsibility. we are told there have been no casualties there. the pentagon says the threat stream is still real and still active. they say the state depd is in touch with the americans who are still trying to get out. cnn s alex marquardt joins us now. what do we know about the americans who may not make it out before the deadline. reporter: the state department says they have been in touch with those americans. there are fewer than 250
and that was another thing that we were very, very concerned about. the president had said that the likelihood of an attack within the next 24 to 36 hours was highly likely. he had been told that by his military commanders. then after that there was the strike on this vehicle. after that strike, is another attack still considered highly likely? we are operating under the assumption that we need to be prepared for future potential threats. and as the general detailed for you in his opening statement, there was, in fact, after we took this air strike against this vehicle, there were rocket attacks. on the airport. the threat stream is still real and active and in many cases it is still specific and we are taking it very seriously and we
profile isis-k militants were killed apone wo one and one wou an air strike. president biden is vowing this strike against isis-k won t be the last. cnn international security editor nick paton walsh is joining me from doha. and white house reporter jasmine wright is in washington. nick, let s start with you and those warnings that another attack is likely in the next 24 to 36 hours. what is the latest? reporter: there is a persist pent drumbeat of what they call a threat stream. obviously tragically realized with the death toll we saw on thursday. but president biden clear to repeat the warnings he says he s received from his commanders that that threat could potentially occur in the next 24 to 36 hours. he made that warning yesterday. now this of course is going to inform the pace and nature of the evacuation operation that we see that is rapidly turning it seems into a withdrawal operation.
