Impacts of COVID-19 on Stolen Generations survivors (Research Report)
New research released by The Healing Foundation shows that the strong and necessary public health restrictions introduced to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia since early 2020 retriggered trauma for some Stolen Generations survivors.
The research data suggests an increased and heightened sense of vulnerability; significant disconnection from family, community, and country; and significant impacts on mental health and wellbeing among an already vulnerable cohort of people.
The Healing Foundation CEO Fiona Cornforth ( formerly Petersen) said the research results will assist governments and authorities in future pandemic planning to build on Australia’s world-leading public health efforts to ensure the most vulnerable in the community are protected.

COVID-19 vaccine rollout for regional, rural and remote Australians
The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines into regional, rural and remote communities is an vital part of the Australian Government’s vaccine strategy to protect country people and managing the fight against the virus in the regions.
The Australian Government is working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, General Practices, state and territory governments, Primary Health Networks, General Practitioner-led Respiratory Clinics and community pharmacies, to ensure that Australian’s living in regional, rural and remote locations have access to a vaccination if they choose to.
To further strengthen our rollout delivery across Australia, both GP’s and pharmacies have been invited to join the nation-wide effort to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. This will integrate more than 2,000 vaccine sites across Australia.
Conversation and truth-telling
26 January
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a connection to these lands which extend back over 60,000 years. On 26 January 1788 British colonisation commenced, and what followed is a long history of marginalisation, dispossession and persecution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. From loss of life, culture and connection to country, to the forced removal of children from their families, known as the stolen generation, and ongoing discrimination and disadvantage.
Due to this, the date of 26 January represents, for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, a reminder of the loss and ongoing trauma experienced as a result of colonisation.
