THE recording session for the new studio album began in January 2020; it was originally set for release later that year. However, the global lockdown led the band to postpone trips to the studio. This resulted in songs written and produced remotely between the band in the US and their guitarist and backing vocalist in Germany. A year into the pandemic, Evanescence released
The Bitter Truth on March 26 â their first album of original material in a decade.
The American rock band made their debut in 2003 with the album Fallen which spent 43 weeks on the Billboard Top 10 and sold more than 17 million copies worldwide. Their debut single, âBring Me to Life,â won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2004 â the same year the band won the Grammy for Best New Artist. In their 18-year-career, the band has made five studio albums including

The Grammy-winning gothic rock band fronted by Amy Lee had seen several members cycle in and out, citing personal and creative differences. And there were a spate of lawsuits between the band, its manager and label Wind-Up Records. Then, after Lee made a jailbreak of sorts, and with a new lineup rerecorded the bandâs greatest hits in a 2017 symphonic album titled âSynthesis,â came the 2018 death of Leeâs brother Robby, who had suffered from severe epilepsy.
But Lee and Evanescenceâs current members used the pandemic shutdowns as an opportunity to write the bandâs first record in 10 years. Itâs called âThe Bitter Truth.â

The Bitter Truth is an epic, band-driven collection inspired by struggle, loss and overcoming within the (often bitter) realities of the 21st century. The band’s first original LP in ten years and since singer Amy Lee started a family, it’s a return-to-force and one hell of a rock and roll album. The new songs have already received early accolades from Elle, Billboard, SPIN, American Songwriter Metal Hammer, Metro, Kerrang, Music Week, Rock Sound and many more, and showcase the “ferocious and hymnal” (The New York Times) sound that made Evanescence a household name, as well as the drama and powerhouse vocals that made Amy Lee “one of rock’s definitive voices” (Rolling Stone).
