The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), together with the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) local municipality, in the Eastern Cape, have conducted an intergovernmental site assessment of the R411 road between Viedgesville and Coffee Bay, to evaluate progress on emergency repairs.
The road is a major entry point for tourists into the town.
The emergency repairs relate mostly to potholes, which started in November last year.

Two security guards were injured and had to be rushed to hospital after they were ambushed by a gang of armed robbers during a cash-in-transit heist between Viedgesville and Mqanduli on Monday afternoon. Eastern Cape provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the incident happened at about 4pm when a G4S armoured truck, which had collected money from businesses in Mqanduli and Elliotdale, was forced to stop after the robbers started shooting at it on the R411.
A neighbour has been arrested after a Mthatha woman and her three-year-old granddaughter were found murdered and parts of their house torched. The woman, 56, and the little girl are believed to have been killed on Wednesday night, but the gruesome discovery was not made until about 7am on Thursday morning, when a relative came to visit her.
Freeways in the Eastern Cape’s three main cities are about to go under surveillance. Authorities hope installing monitored cameras will help lower crime and road accidents. The South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd revealed that it was in the final stages of implementing its freeway management systems.
