Press Release – NZEI Te Riu Roa
The country’s largest education union is calling on the Government to step in to correct pay injustices in the early childhood sector this International Workers’ Day.
To coincide with May Day, NZEI Te Riu Roa members and supporters are set to kick off an ECE Week of Action today. Throughout the week early childhood teachers will be holding events across the country to demand an immediate end to the pay imbalance of up to 31% between ECE teachers and their counterparts in kindergartens and schools.
The Week of Action comes ahead of Budget announcements later this month, where the union’s members and supporters hope to see pay parity for the sector accelerated in line with promises made by the Minister of Education ahead of the last election.

A Hawke s Bay early childhood centre has permanently closed amid a shortage of staff – giving less than 24 hours notice to parents. The decision to close Lollipops Hastings was announced on Thursday, with the finger pointed at a shortage of early childhood education (ECE) staff in the region.
An email sent to parents at 6pm by Evolve Education Group Hawke s Bay area manager Hayley Whitaker said the centre would permanently close from the end of the day .
Dekker was recognised for her commitment to children and putting their learning at the forefront, but also for being a supportive leader. She said she was the kind of person who was happy to sit in the background and not be recognised. “It’s my passion, it’s my dream. Probably the biggest thing for me is to make a difference in this work. I do that every day, not just through the children but through families and through teachers. “Even though I’m in my manager s role, I’m still actively involved with children and the families. I just want to grow teachers to be the best they can be and just support families to be the best they can be for their children.”
