the level of military action, for instance, at the border between israel and lebanon, it seems like both sides are trying to keep it below the threshold of a broader conflict. the problem is, those thresholds are movable, and my perception of a threshold might be different from yours, and my perception of what is breaking the threshold might be different from yours. to those points, we have hezbollah saying that they will strike back and strike back hard. >> was so much activity in the region, to that point, one miscalculation could seriously create even more problems. >> i had a u.s. military official mentioned today that they are noticing there is that iranian warship now in the red sea, operating close to u.s. warships, and anytime you have closes in close proximity, the danger of miscalculation arises. >> back to tel aviv, it's obvious there is an increased threat of isolation, given the activity in lebanon, iran,

over 100 iranians killed by these explosions raises concerns about what iran will do. there's continuing attacks on the united states. i mean, five more attacks that have taken place in syria and iran against u.s. forces. and that remains a concern as well. and then add to that, the fact that there's a an iranian warship in the red sea. they're continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the red sea raises real concerns about whether or not it will escalate with the houthis. so we are at a point where without question there is a real danger of escalation in the war in the middle east. >> neil: when it comes to attacks on u.s. forces that escalation has been on for a while. there's been 118 attacks on u.s. forces. the attacks have come about ten times our response to them.

the threat is still very clear and present. with the most recent development with fast speed boats also being neutralised, and an iranian warship also heading for the red sea, it seems as if the military tension is building up and it is not really what the global shipping would like and what will cause global supply chains to go back to where they once were, just—in—time deliveries, all the time all year round. so this is not going in the right direction. we round. 50 this is not going in the right direction.— round. so this is not going in the right direction. we are seeing the big shipping _ right direction. we are seeing the big shipping giant _ right direction. we are seeing the big shipping giant is _ right direction. we are seeing the big shipping giant is taking - big shipping giant is taking alternative longer routes which is making the cost of shipping become more expensive, so is there a risk that the price rises become embedded evenif that the price rises become embedded even if the threat is neutralised? what we see on a more frequent basis

shipping giants hapag—lloyd and maersk have today extended their decision to avoid the area after a maersk vessel was attacked over the weekend. iran backed houthi rebels hit the ship with a missile and tried to climb aboard before the us navy intervened and sank the rebels four boats — killing the crew in the process. iran has responded by sending a warship to the area, raising the risk of military escalation. the us military says there have been at least 23 attacks since mid—november on a route that acconts for about i2% of global trade and which is now being avoided by several of the world's biggest shipping companies. our business reporter jonathanjosephsjoins me now with more on this. this is a fast moving story and we have heard from some of the biggest shipping lines today, and this is an important route for global trade through the suez canal and the red sea and cutting shipping times from

explains. >> reporter: tonight the israeli military says it's pulling thousands of troops out of gaza for now to pace itself for the long haul. a u.s. official telling nbc news it appears to be the start of the new phase in the war that the biden administration has been pushing for. but israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is warning the war is expected to last many more months. that war has been fueling growing tensions between iran and the west, including in the red sea, where over the weekend yemen-based houthis, who are backed by iran, tried to hijack a container ship and shot at u.s. navy helicopters. u.s. forces then sunk three houthi boats, killing everyone on board. now iranian media say iran has sent in a warship. the houthis say they're targeting israeli-bound ships in solidarity with the palestinians but have repeatedly attacked ships with no connection to israel. how does the u.s. strike a balance between deterring houthi attacks and triggering a war in

hello. if you justjoined us, i'm sally bundock. we will now talk through the top stories. if this is your first day back at work after a long christmas break we will bring you up to speed. and we start in the middle east, where the threat of military escalation continues to hang over the red sea. the us, britain, and their allies in the region are on alert to see if their warnings to the iran—backed houthis are now working. attacks on commercial vessels have been happening since the war between israel and gaza began. houthis — who are behind the attacks — say it's in support of hamas and has turned a vital global trade route, that handles about 12% of the world's commerce, into a risky maritime passage. the uk defence secretary, grant shapps, said britain would not hesitate to take what he called "direct action". meanwhile, bloomberg reports iran dispatched a warship to the red sea after the us navy destroyed three houthi boats.
