Ag groups call to reopen farms and lift emergency farm worker restrictions
Washington state’s agricultural groups are appealing to Gov. Inslee to repeal recently renewed COVID-19 emergency rules for farm workers using temporary housing following his announcement that the state will loosen restrictions for fully vaccinated people.
Farmers across the state have been leading a comprehensive worker safety program focused on widespread testing and vaccination. As a result, the CDC has recognized that farm worker facilities in Washington state are three times safer than local communities, achieving a nearly 100 percent vaccination rate. Despite this, on May 9 the DOH and L & I automatically renewed restrictive emergency farm worker rules for the third time.

PASCO — A Yakima County judge last week blocked some COVID-related restrictions on farms and orchards.
Superior Court Judge Blaine Gibson issued an injunction stopping the state from enforcing a series of regulations that are meant to protect farmworkers.
The injunction included rules that:
• Required twice-daily visits from medical staff to isolated workers.
• Required workers to be within 20 minutes of an emergency room and an hour from a ventilator.
• Provided open access to people from the community.
The ruling left in place restrictions on bunk beds, which continues to be an issue for the two groups that brought the suit — the Washington Farm Bureau and Wafla.
