Water reforms and record capital works behind proposed rates rise for Marlborough

RNZ Water reform is in the works across the country, but local and central government are facing a myriad of issues and critiques. Hear more in RNZ s The Detail. A hefty rates rise will be discussed this week as the Marlborough District Council prepares for a deluge of regulatory costs and unprecedented growing pains. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett and councillors will review a proposal to raise rates in a budget meeting on Thursday, where priorities for the Long Term Plan 2021-2031 will be fleshed out. Leggett acknowledged the proposed rates rise, which could be up to 6 per cent, would be higher than what Marlborough ratepayers were used to. Last year it was only 1.88 per cent, deliberately kept low because of the impact of Covid and lockdowns on the economy, and the tourism, retail and hospitality sectors.
