Transcripts For WTTG Fox 5 News At Ten 20100210

. here we go again. another bitter blast storming through our region. and fox 5 news has a network of reporters covering every angle. from heavy snow to dangerous wind. and the potential for massive power outages. everything you need to weather this storm. fox 5 news at 10:00 starts right now. good evening. i'm brian bolter. i'm shawn yancy. round two is already causing a whole new list of closures tonight. in fact, we're kicking thing off with a winter weather alert. here's what you need to know right now. the federal government right now is closed tomorrow. many school districts are closed the rest of the week. metrorail already shutting down above ground service and metro bus also canceled tomorrow. the big question right now, what is the latest with this storm? sue palka has the answer now for us tonight. sue? >> what we have seen today is light to moderate snow but at times it's been heavy down to our south. we are already seeing as you look live outside harrison street, a small accumulation in some areas between 2 to 4 inches has already fallen. look at the rate at which it's falling. we've seen bands going on and a little bit of blowing. lake ridge, virginia three inches. we've already seen about three and a half in laurel and chesapeake beach reporting moderate now. damascus 4 inches. but here's the big headline with this thing. it's going to be snowy. it's going to be a major sn. not nearly as much snow as we got through this weekend bup the wind is going -- weekend, but the wind is going to be a bigger deal and it begins tomorrow. we started seeing snow widespread around 4:00. the warnings we know about. but now let's talk about the headlines and what you should expect because really wind will make blowing and drifting of the snow we do get quite difficult tomorrow. we are calling it another major snowstorm. no, i don't think it's going to break records in terms of the amount of snow it produces. the accumulation we see around will continue overnight. it will ebb and flow. tomorrow morning the accumulation rates will pick up. so will the winds as we see an area of low pressure deepening off the coast. a very powerful low. that will in turn crank up the wind gusts. in the afternoon we expect it to be the worst with the winds up to 40 miles an hour which means that the snow that is out there is going to blow and drift. we'll have low visibilities and we're going to have cold. windchills will be in the teens and the wind does not let up till closer to thursday morning. wind will be a big deal. a lot of these lines and trees are are sressed. i do worry there are going to be some power outages. gary mcgrady is taking a look at radar. >> it looks like we're going to be into a little bit after lull over the next few hours back out to the west. trueview will show you, seems to look like the same storm we were looking at earlier but there's some subtle differences now. we are beginning to see the formation probably over the next couple of hours, an area of low pressure forming along the coast. we do have one area of low pressure through ohio. that continues to be the primary low. we also have a secondary low here off shore just south of wilmington, myrtle beach there. but we know now eventually these two lows will basically come together. energy will be transferred out to the coast tomorrow just off shore from washington and that is going to allow those wind speeds to really start to pick up. max hd radar will show the snow here locally and just down to the south and to the southeast in that pink is where we're getting that transition from snow over to a little bit of sleet and eventually down towards southern sections of st. marys county, they're already into the rain down there. we're watching the heaviest of the snow bands. where we're finding the heaviest of the snow primarily this evening has been right along i-95 and out to the east. prince george's county has been getting some fairly heavy snow. we've had fairly heavy snow moving right up here into the district as well. and then there's continuing to be heavy snow for prince william county up into fairfax county. what we're seeing now is a little bit of a lull back out to the west here from, say, loudoun county right out towards 81 and into west virginia. it is lightening up just a little bit as it is for frederick county as well. i think we're going to continue to see that for the next several hours, but this heavy snow band that you see in the red from southwest to northeast, it jumps right across the district, that will stay in place for quite a while. so i'm expecting at least during the early overnight period, that here in the district and parts to the east we'll actually be getting the heaviest of the snowfall and then by tomorrow morning another big general area of moderate to heavy snow will be forming as the coastal area of low pressure is forming. as sue as been hinting at as well, once that area of low pressure forms, the winds will rapidly increase right on across the area. so, sue, we'll send it back up to you and you can give us an idea on total snow accumulation amounts. >> we're thinking in general this is going to be closer to 8 to 10 inches in the district. let's take you through the time period. what you should expect in metro d.c. i also want to mention this will be heavier north and east. by 11:00 we have 2 to 4 inches we expected. wednesday morning would do we have on the ground? 5 to 7 inches. winds aren't too bad by wednesday morning. as we get closer to the noon hour, we're going to see the winds begin to increase and we'll -- they'll be noticeable. they'll probably be sustained at about 20 miles per hour. the gusts won't be horrendous. as we go through the rest of the afternoon, those gusts start to pick up, 30 to 35 mileser hour it noon and 5:00. between 5:00 and 8:00, i think that is when we may be at our peak with gusts around 40 to 45 miles an hour. now, the snow will tamer off sometime -- taper off sometime after that. it's looking like a general 8 to 10 for the district but parts of the area will see up to 16 inches. that will be north and east and philadelphia, new york city and boston are going to get pounded. philadelphia for the second time. new york city didn't get as much on this. brian, coming up in just a few minutes, we're going to show what you we expect in terms of winds through the afternoon and day tomorrow. that's coming up. lots of live pictures, too. >> one of the major concerns tonight, even more power outages perhaps from these winds. thousands have been in the dark since the blizzard of 2010 which hit friday. let's go right to the numbers now. so far things are improving. pepco has nearly 4,000 customers without power. meaning they've restored power to about 2,000 customers in the last hour. dominion virginia and bge around 200. it's a cold, frustrating night. bob barnard continues our coverage. >> reporter: imagine bracing yourself for this snowstorm when you haven't even crawled out of the abyss of the last one. tt's the situation facing many people in our area, including several families just up the street in bethesda. the girls are watching little mermaid on a laptop. two of them live here. indicatety and heidi are just visiting indefinitely. their mom is helping out in the kitchen. >> we spent four nights in four different places. when you've got young ki that's just a nightmare. we're settled in and we're home. >> reporter: their dad is down the street checking on their home. >> this is home. if you need to refrigerate any vegetable, you can come in here. >> reporter: it's been without electricity since saturday. >> it's freezing in here. it almost feels like you're looking at somebody else's house. >> reporter: christa and her husband, lucas, have opened their home to neighbors. >> i'm sure they would have done the same for us. it's no problem for us. >> reporter: they've been without power for 48 hours over the weekend. >> sunday late afternoon we were down at 46 degrees and then we were that close to go to a hotel but finally we get back. >> reporter: on his way to check out his home, mark bumped into of all people a crew working for pepco. >> i think we're on the list but if you guys could stop by sometime soon, that would be great. there are trucks. it's hope. >> reporter: six houses on this street remain dark four days later. >> when you are in a situation where you've lost your power and your family is cold, it is the ultimate definition of a neighbor to have somebody say, we will take you in and we'll take you in as long as you need to be taken in. and that's -- you just can't put a price on that. the friendships that we have with these people will be one that we have forever because of this experience. >> reporter: there are several other people on that street sleeping the night in the dark tonight. we'll visit with several of them coming on the news edge at 11:00. >> bob barnard, thank you. as sue said at the top this storm pose as much different threat than the weekend blizzard. the powerful winds and bitt cold could make it dangerous just to be outside for a few minutes. tonight we're riding along with d.c.'s finest to see how they're preparing to helpin these extreme elements. matt? >> reporter: shawn, d.c.'s fire chief told me tonight he's very concerned about the strong winds tomorrow. he's worried they could produce whiteout conditions making it impossible for you and i to see and for firefighters to answer calls. firefighters on high alert across the district tonight. calls for help have doubled since last weekend's huge snowstorm. and this next storm could make things worse. >> i'm good. >> reporter: tonight we rode along with five firefighters from truck company 14 based in cleveland park. >> lot of the side streets haven't been touched at all. that's a challenge. >> reporter: sergeant jonathan johnson says making rescues in this much snow is overwhelming at times. these huge trucks simply can't make it through some streets. >> [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: chief dennis rubin tells us this next storm worries him. >> we're ready but of course 'm very, very concerned. >> reporter: he says the strong wind could cause hanging icicles to break off and become flying missiles. also, if a fire breaks out, the wind could fuel the flames. and the chief worries whiteout conditions could catch many drivers by surprise. >> whiteout conditions can be blinding for them but it will yet be another obstacle for our members to be able to see to get the fire apparatuses, the ambulances there safely. >> reporter: back on the ladder truck, these firefighter itself admit they're a bit tired but ready for whatever emergency should come. >> we're managing. we're doing very well. we do it with a smile on our face. >> reporter: back out live. you're looking at dupont circle right now. one thing to keep in mind firefighters are telling us that a lot of these big fire trucks have huge chains on the tires. what that does is it slows them down. their top speed with those chains on the tires is only 30 miles an hour. so if you do have an emergency, it could take them a while to get to you. brian? >> path matt ackland tonight. fox 5 morning news coming on early with everything you need to know about this storm. our coverage starts tomorrow at 4:00 a.m. the snow is causing major problems for anyone who actually has to leave the house. from the roads to the rails to the skies. we have everything you need to know about getting around. wisdom? >> reporter: once again the snow is starting to fall and some people are still wondering when are they going to get their streets plowed by a snowplow. i'm wisdom martin. we've got reaction from people in the community and county leaders when fox 5 news continues after the break. f round two is undrway. that means area airports are once again under wraps. at all airports flights are done for the day. airlines at dulles and reagan have canceled all their flights tomorrow. bwi, there are still some flights on the schedule. you should absolutely check with the airline before you leave because those aren't going to hold up, we can guarantee it. the whole thing enough to drive passengers to despair. they will try to clear the runways as soon as possible but wind will be a major factores all abo ground metro service is suspended. roby chavez continues our team coverage now. >> reporter: despite the driving snow, metro above ground was rolling again. passengers were just glad to see service finally restored, even if it is short lived. oh, wow. i've been waiting to get to this point for at least three days. >> it was great that metro extended the service, the above ground another day of just being limited would have been a headache for a lot of passengers. >> depending on weather conditions, metro service may change. >> reporter: with the new snow falling, metro alerted passengers the system may shut down with little notice. on wednesday it's already been announced it will be underground service only again. there will be no metro bus either. >> you know, you've got to do what you've got to do, right? if it's for the protection of the citizens, okay. okay, i'm for it. >> you're grateful for transportation. even though metro has its headaches, we are grateful for it. you know, we appreciate the effort they are making to take care of us. >> reporter: this winter will be one to remember. the snow's sequel is not welcome. >> kind of rough. i've been in d.c. all my life. this is the worst snowstorm i've been through. >> i've lived around this area almost 27 years now. i've never seen it so piled up with snow. i've never seen so much snow, to be honest. >> reporter: now commuters will take any ride home. many know with the new storm we may all be frozen in place for the rest of he week. this week has been slow going. >> but this morning when i turned to nwr, found out the redline was working, i was really please. i was happy. it took us almost a half-hour at every station but finally i was able to reach my destination. >> reporter: those were the last underground trains of the night -- the above ground trains rather for the night. underground trains will run every 30 minutes and close at midnight. tomorrow metro bus and metro access will stay parked. >> thank you for the update. the roads also taking a beating from these back-to-back snow storms. tonight some of the roads still haven't seen a plow. wisdom martin is in the thick of it tonight. wisdom, what's the latest? >> reporter: shawn, tonight we focus on some of these side roads. the million dollar question is when is a snowplow going to come into the neighborhood and clear away some of the streets. tonight in this particular neighborhood in largo, they finally saw a snowplow. unfortunately they saw some more snow, too. in the largo nose subdivision, the roads ha not been touched by any snowplow since the snow started friday. the residents here are tired of waiting. >> trying to follow everybody's tracks from getting in and out. that's the best we can do. >> reporter: this heating company has just made a house call when they got stuck in the unplowed streets. they spent more than an hour trying to maneuver their way out of the area. >> look at this. we've been out here, stuck in our homes for three, four days. this is just absolutely ridiculous. >> reporter: at the prince george's county public works and transportation headquarters, there are more than 130 cameras watching primary and secondary roads. they have started to clear the way in some neighborhoods but they say keep in mind this was an unprecedented snowstorm. >> we normally start within the communities and we put our four by fours which is like a pickup truck with a plow and salt dispenser on the back of it. it was too high and heavy for them so we had to wait till we could pull our six wheelers off the primaries and they went in as the first line of defense. >> reporter: councilman jack jackson promised there would be a snowplow on every street in the county. just after 6:00 p.m., the first snowplow showed up in this community. with the new snow falling on top of the snow and ice covered roads, clearing the way won't be an easy task. >> i say to the citizens, they've got to be patient. they're looking for the kind of snow removal process that we do with a 12 or 14-inch snow. >> reporter: county leaders say they have astrict policy and plan on how they deal with the streets. as far as which street they go to first. the area is set up into five different zones. they simply attack them one zone at a time in order zone one, two, three, four and five and that's how they deal with clearing the streets. but as you heard county jack johnson say, it is going to take some patience because it's an enormous storm that hit our area but people in the communities are running low on patience. >> you can understand why and here comes round two. you can bet more closures and delays will be rolling in as the snow builds up. >> another problem out there, the serious winds headed right for us. sue palka is tracking more on the winds from the weather center tonight. >> we were saying yesterday this storm is almost going to be in to parts. there's the snow part. we're getting part of that now. we'll get more snow tomorrow but the wind will be a big deal tomorrow. you're looking at i-70. i've seen some big totals to our fort already. how about five inchesin emmitsburg and gaither in howard county. three and a half inches in fredricksburg. what about the wind? we know we're going to be talking about 8 to 10 inches of snow and more to our north and east on the order of 10 to 16. look at the wind gusts and look at the legend and watch the clock. tomorrow morning it's breezy. it's not windy. but as we go through time, what i'm showing you here are lines of equal pressure or isobars. the closer they're together, the windier it gets. it gets going around noon. watch the purple, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00. by 5:00 we're starting to get the winds gusting to 40. by 9:00, 10:00, it's going on and we have ourselves a classic nor'easter with strong blizzard conditions from the cape to the chesapeake bay to ocean city. that is many hours of windses that will lower visibility and cause big problems i think for road and air travelers, especially starting tomorrow afternoon, brian. >> thank you, sue. the snow not just trouble for you at home. it's hitting someone else hard, too. will? >> reporter: hey, brian. the streets here in old town alexandria are covered with a blanket of snow. and we haven't seen the worst of it yet as you've been hearing. as road crews continue to work to keep us all safe, many of these small businesses and large ones for that matter are praying for a break from mother nature. you're going to find out why and i think you can guess this one coming up at the bottom of the hour. plus, you have questions and our storm team has some answers. gwen tolbart right now is in the fox montgomery county. the snow is coming down in old town, alexandria but the snow is beautiful. but the road conditions are getting worse by the minute. will thomas is live in old town. >> reporter: old town is pretty much a ghost town tonight. a few of the restaurants are still open, mostly a bar crowd. some folks who can just walk from home nearby. how often can you walk down the middle of king street. king street in the middle of old town, not a single car behind me. if you look down, you can see there's no pavement. the roads are completely covered with snow. because the roads are so dangerous to drive on, many businesses are really being hurt hard. the show must go on, even in the middle of a fierce winter storm. >> they have some good movies in here. >> reporter: roger manages the old town theater. the snow isn't keeping his moviegoers away. it's bringing them in. the past five days business is up more than 300%. >> people come in. they get cabin fever and they just want to the night. >> reporter: so those are the last pizzas of the night? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: he was definitely working hard. power outages continue to be a big problem, a big concern, especially as those high winds move in overnight and into tomorrow. in this particular area, you've got a lot of heavy tree canopies. so there is definitely a fear that more lines are going to come down. if you were watching us last night at 10:00 and during the news edge at 11:00, we profiled a takoma park family in maryland who hasn't had power since friday. i got a call a short time ago. their power was island up towards boston, pleas like that, interior portions of the northeast. some of that heavy snow is -- will fall in northeastern maryland as close to us as baltimore, maybe even columbia, places like that where we'll see snowfall amounts over 15 inches in so of the those locations up to and over 15- inch. for us in the washington area, we'll see lesser amounts. generally speaking, here is what to expect. we'll try to answer your questions for you with this storm system as it moves through during the day today. first of all, by 7:00 this morning, generally in the washington area, four we'll see drifting and blowing snow. the snow will be dropping off in term of the intensity of the snow rather significantly by that point. the snow will be blowing around because of those winds. generally speaking, area-wide totals anywhere from six to 16 inches. that is a huge range but we have to do that because it will be lesser to the south an west and in d.c. and more to the northeast. we cover a big viewing area. gaithersburg right now, 27 degrees. 0 in washington. 28 out in winchester. salisbury, 36-degree. not too bad there. forecast for washington for today, winter storm warning out in all of this snow. it has been really bad last few days as far as rooted conditions and it is getting worse again with the next round. can you see springs are pretty covered here. you can see this is the strand and it has hardly been plowed at all. we probably won't see anybody driving down here any time soon. this is king street down here and then there at union, with saw some plows a little bit earlier but they can't haven't come through any time recently so all of that is making the snowstorm very costly for the businesses down here. now, bugsy's pizza kept delivering all night until the snow do the to be too much. people are hang a hard time getting down here so we are depending on the footed traffic to keep the businesses in business. for restaurants, they're seeing a big they always do which is hit the primary roads first and then they'll hit the secondary roads and get into neighborhoods. they are also asking people to be patient. just to give you an idea of what they're dealing with, they removed about 500,000 tons of snow in northern virginia from the last snowstorm and they haven't gotten all that, as we showed you. there is still a lot more work ahead. snow that is out there. >> yeah, we have big space on the other side. >> reporter: according to at a spokes person for the woodrow wilson bridge, plans are to dump as much snow as psible. as the snow melts being it will drain into hunting creek which is considered a wetlands area and then into the potomac river so the wetlands serve as a filter. while there is still plenty of room here now, as more snow falls, this area will fill up and folk like william chavez will continue working around the clock. jurisdictions all over the area are facing similar problems. what to do with all the snow once they've gotten it off the roadways. in d.c., they are taking it over near rfk stadium. in maryland, they are taking a lot of the snow right outside the salt domes. underneath the wilson bridge, claudia coffey, fox 5 news. >> i was not aware of where they would put that. >>s with we we go to the break, we want to take another look outside as that heavy snow continues to fall. weather guys
