ILLINOIS STATE NEWS BRIEF (1/14/21)

Olney, IL, USA / WVLN 740 AM/107.1 FM | CBS Sports Radio Jan 14, 2021 7:47 AM (CHICAGO) The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported 5,862 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday with 97 new deaths. The new statewide totals show 1,046,030 confirmed cases with 17,840 deaths around the state. For updates on all the numbers, go to the dph.illinois.gov website or if any questions, call the toll-free IDPH HealthLine, available around the clock, at 1-800-889-3931. ————————————————————————————————————————— (SPRINGFIELD) With the Lame Duck session of the 101st General Assembly ending yesterday morning, one of the most historic moves in Springfield occurred when State Representative Emanuel “Chris” Welch was elected as the new Speaker of the House, not only becoming Illinois’ first African American to hold the position, but replacing Michael Madigan who had held the Speaker seat for nearly four decades. However, many lawmakers, especially those from downstate, believe Welch is simply an extension of Madigan and his power. The State House adjourned its Tuesday session shortly after 4:00 yesterday morning and then reconvened a few hours later Wednesday morning to certify Representative Welch as the new Speaker.
