Fire Academy is now a reality | The Stokes News

Thorpe instructs his Public Safety I students at South Stokes High School. DANBURY When students went back to school last week after their Christmas break, it also meant the start of something pretty important: The Stokes County School System’s new Fire Academy, something that’s been dreamed about for quite a while. Twenty-nine students have signed up for the program. Classes are being taught at South and North Stokes high schools by Mark Thorpe, who has been with the City of King Fire Department as a firefighter since 1996.

Clemmons visual artist was convinced she had no talent until she took her first drawing class

If Charlotte Willhite had continued to believe what her seventh-grade art teacher told her years ago, she probably wouldn’t be a visual artist today. “My art teacher told me I needed to be in something else. I had no talent,” Willhite said. That teacher discouraged her from continuing any art classes. “When you’re a young teenager, I think you tend to believe whatever an adult tells you,” Willhite said. “I believed her, so I actually didn’t take my first drawing class until the fall of 2005.” “I discovered that I do have a little bit of talent,” she said laughing.
