ON January 10, 1978, The Fiji Times reported on the opening of the Fijian Teachers Association annual conference that was held at the Nasinu Teachers College.
Chief guest was then Minister for Education, Semesa Sikivou. Mr Sikovou said that priorities were wrong and people placed too much emphasis on passing examinations and relied too much on government aid.
He spoke in Fijian for almost an hour about education problems relating especially to Fijians.

Students in Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa-affected areas of Macuata and Bua can expect more assistance in stationery, says Fiji Teachers Union general secretary, Agni Deo Singh.
He has urged parents to play their role and support their children’s education.
Mr Singh visited affected schools with officials from the TISI Sangam organisation earlier this week handing out books and school bags.
“It’s so encouraging to see parents come out in huge numbers to support their children in schools and collect the assistance,” he said.
“I urge all parents to play their role well and support their children to achieve a good and successful future.

Teacher in STC Yasa-affected schools should be commended for their commitment in preparing facilities for the new academic term.
The Fiji Teachers Union general secretary Agni Deo Singh said such commitment reflected the teachers’ dedication in ensuring that students received the best this academic year.
“Some teachers are staying in tents as well because the cyclone has affected their quarters and we must thank them for the wonderful job in preparing the facilities for the new year,” he said.

Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar says they have surpassed their target to assist 6000 students in the Tropical Cyclone Yasa affected areas as a lot of people are coming forward to donate.
This follows a donation of $77,500 the Ministry received today from Yaadein Vision which will be used to assist almost 1,200 students in 42 schools.
Each student in these schools will be given stationery packs and school bags.

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar says they are on track to provide assistance to 6000 students in Tropical Cyclone Yasa affected areas.
The Ministry is working with the Fiji Teachers Union, Fiji Muslim League, Sathya Sai Service Organisation of Fiji, Yaadein Vision, SODELPA, Forklift Fiji and TISI Sangam to provide students with school bags and stationery.
Akbar says they have received a lot of support from their stakeholders and the organisations have been going in affected communities to start distribution.
