Villagers of Kia Island receive emergency relief supplies

Villagers of Kia Island in Macuata have received relief supplies from the National Disaster Management Office, Australian Government, Red Cross, Vodafone and Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
Kia Island is one of the worst affected areas after Cyclone Yasa.
The Australian TC Yasa relief supplies arrived on Kia Island yesterday.
Kia Island Nurse Losana Yabaki says after the cyclone, they were in urgent need of food and water but they are so fortunate that the very next day they received assistance from some of their relatives overseas, Red Cross and Vodafone. The NDMO also dropped off supplies over the weekend.

Chief Executive Officer of Kina Bank Greg Pawson and Westpac Fiji Chief Executive Kip Hanna. Westpac and Kina Bank have given around $150,000 to the Fiji Red Cross Society to support people and communities affected by Cyclone Yasa.
Westpac Fiji Chief Executive Kip Hanna says they have a long history of assisting Fijians and hopes they are able to help during what is already a trying time for the people. Chief Executive Officer of Kina Bank Greg Pawson says the assistance will enable the Red Cross to respond quickly to immediate needs such as food and shelter.

A total of 57 communities have received non-food item supplies from the Fiji Red Cross Society. These communities include; 43 from the North, 10 in the West and 4 in the East.
The non-food items consist of tarpaulins, tents, Jerry Cans, shelter toolkits, kitchen sets, mosquito nets, solar lights, hygiene kits, baby kits, dignity kits and blankets.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) estimated that 93,000 people (21,000 households) were affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.
Relief Efforts Continue in the Northern Western and Eastern division
Format
The Fiji Red Cross emergency response team continues to co-ordinate and deploy teams out in the North, the Eastern and Western division.
According to the Fiji NDMO, the country has 183 evacuation centres open with a total of 7731 evacuees. The Central division has one evacuation centre open with a total of 8 evacuees. The Eastern division have 20 evacuation centres open with 377 evacuees. The Western division have 29 centres open with 1033 evacuees with the North having the most, a total of 63331 evacuees in 133 centres.
With the damaging Category 5 winds of Tropical Cyclone Yasa, most communities in the North, particularly in the Bua province and smaller outer islands are without homes and with limited access to clean, running water. The Fiji Red Cross is working closely with the Fijian government and its partners to ensure these communities are reached as soon as possible.
