7:09 PM MYT SUVA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasa will hit Fiji from Thursday and the Fijian authorities have warned that more than 600,000 people or 66 percent of the Fijian population will be affected. According to Fiji Meteorological Services on Wednesday, cyclone Yasa, which is currently moving towards Fiji at about 12 km/hr, is located about 395 km northwest of Fiji s third largest city of Nadi at midday on Wednesday. Close to its center, the cyclone is expected to have average winds up to 220 km/hr with momentary gusts to 315 km/hr. During the period from Thursday to Saturday, the cyclone is expected to affect most parts of Fiji, including the two main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands and nearby smaller islands.
Dec 15, 2020 04:39:41 PM Social Democratic Liberal party leader Viliame Gavoka is urging all Fijians to take proper precautions as advised by the Fiji Meteorological Service that Severe Tropical Cyclone (TC) Yasa Category 3 will continue to intensify. Gavoka has urged fellow Fijians to take heed of the advice and be updated with the weather updates given by the Fiji Met Services. “When a disaster strikes people may not have much time to respond. Fiji’s families will cope best by preparing for disaster before it strikes,” he said. “As TC YASA shows a projected landfall in Fiji this week, I offer a few words of advice to all Fijians to take heed of warnings from the weather office and the Fiji National Disaster Management Office,” he said.

Tropical Cyclone Yasa formed over open waters between Fiji and Vanuatu and has intensified into a Category 4 system (BOM/FMS Scale). It is expected to further intensify with a potential landfall over large parts of Fiji on Friday 18 December. The Pacific Humanitarian Team is currently upgrading preparedness procedures with humanitarian partners and is coordinating with Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

Heavy rains on 13-14 December led to floods and landslides in Cilacap District in Central Java.
This is the third time in two months that this area has been affected by flooding.
