He said the FTUC objected suggestions by the Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) that civil servants’ salary be reduced by 15 to 20 per cent in the 2021-2022 National Budget. “Workers have mortgages, bills and other financial commitments to pay,” he said. “Many support extended families who are unemployed or dependents. “Civil servants have not received their merit increments according to government’s own remuneration guidelines implemented in 2017. “The FTUC reminds FIA that the national budget is not only about numbers and balancing the books.

ANISH CHAND Image: FIA/FT FILE The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service must be established as a business and commercial enterprise, states the Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA). In its 2021-2022 national Budget submission, the FIA stated the review should be from a “commercial, cost-benefit approach”. “Inefficiencies in business and IT processes as well as time spent by staff in resolving matters are all costs to business,” stated the FIA. “FRCS must work with other regulatory bodies such as Investment Fiji and other government ministries on approved projects by proactively reaching out to these taxpayers and working out solutions to ensure projects were not stalled.”
