The young girl had been in critical condition since she was struck while riding in a car Dec. 21 near the popular Phipps Plaza mall in the city’s Buckhead neighborhood.

Girl, 7, dies days after being struck by stray bullet while Christmas shopping in Atlanta By Erin Donaghue December 28, 2020 / 1:34 PM / CBS News A seven-year-old Georgia girl has died days after she was struck by a stray bullet during a Christmas shopping outing with her family, according to local media reports. Kennedy Maxie died Saturday evening at a local hospital where she was being treated, the Fulton County Medical Examiner s office told CBS station WGCL.  The girl lived in Cobb County and attended a local elementary school, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Our hearts are broken by the senseless murder of Kennedy, Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said in a statement released to the station. While the Atlanta Police Department has significant leads in the apprehension of those responsible, it does not erase the pain felt when a beautiful, vibrant, and loving child is tragically taken from her family.

The first investigation started May 10, when police received a complaint regarding an April incident. “Detectives learned through the family members of the victim, 79-year-old John Furman, that in early April, while in the care of this facility, he was found on the floor after suffering from a fall,” the release stated. “As a result of this fall, the victim suffered a laceration to his head and massive bruising to his face.” Employees reported Furman’s fall and injuries to the center’s manager, Katrina Perkins, and its director, Jeffrey Smith. However, according to the release, “Both the director and manager to this facility failed to notify EMS or the victim’s family. Due to these injuries, the victim’s health started to decline rapidly; however, family members were unaware and not allowed to visit him due to COVID-19 restrictions.
