YWCA sets March 6 session on implicit bias

ALTON YWCA Alton will host an Awareness Session at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6, via Zoom.
The program is made possible by a Healing Illinois grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services. The event will be facilitated by Dr. Jennifer Hernandez, a special ed teacher of 15 years who has primarily taught students with emotional disturbance, mental illness and incarcerated youth in secondary alternative settings.
In the last three years of her tenure in special education, she was a special education administrator in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She was a witness and student advocate in the aftermath of the murder of Michael Brown.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. A Ferguson-Florissant School District parent fears students, especially students of color, are falling further behind their white counterparts in districts in other parts of town have returned to class.
“White schools have adapted to COVID, but our children are still out, Jeannine Warren said.
The district recently voted to keep students at home at least until March 1 citing the high number of COVID-19 cases in the community.
“All but one of the ZIP codes served by Ferguson-Florissant are in the red and not just barely in the red, explained school district spokesperson Kevin Hampton.
Marquette grad Fleming named as its new principal

ALTON Marquette Catholic High School has hired Dr. Barbara Fleming as principal for the 2021-2022 school year.
Fleming will succeed Michael E. Slaughter who will retire June 30, 2021, after leading the co-educational, private school for the past 16 years.
“As a graduate of Marquette myself, I am honored to be selected and look forward to getting started,” said Fleming.
Fleming has served as the Director of Special Education for the Parkway School District for the past eight years. She also was the Director of Elementary Education, and Director of Federal Programs and Early Childhood Education for the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She also served as a principal for 10 years.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. The man who shot and killed himself after an hours-long standoff with St. Louis County police Tuesday night has been identified as the suspect wanted in a double homicide on Christmas.
The investigation into the case led police to a house on Edison Avenue in Velda City at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police believed Brown was inside but they didn t have a positive identification of him until Wednesday afternoon.
