Fairfax County could replace parking lots with affordable housing

Fairfax County may be swapping out some of its extra parking space at the Fairfax County Government Center for affordable housing. You’ll soon have a chance to tell the board what you think. Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw brought up the idea at a county board meeting back in October. He offered a motion that the county board authorize a hearing on allowing the county to transfer ownership of parking lots G and H at the Fairfax County Government Center to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA). Then they’d work with the county and developers to replace the parking lots with affordable housing. The Government Center is in the Braddock District’s western edge. Virginia Governor Northam says he will absolutely take COVID-19 vaccine when available By FOX 5 Digital Team Published  WASHINGTON - Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said he would absolutely get the COVID-19 vaccine once it is made available to him. Speaking with FOX 5 on Thursday, Northam said the state received 70,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine on Monday. He says he hopes to get an addition 140,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine for the state once it is approved. Northam, a physician, says he has followed the data released regarding the vaccines and is confident they are safe. He also encourages all Virginians to get the vaccine once it is available to them.

Virginia Master Naturalist Program Graduates Spring Class

The 2020 Spring class of Virginia Master Naturalists (VMN) graduated, finally, in a Zoom ceremony on Dec. 14. The 10 graduates from across northern Virginia are now prepared to conduct and participate in area environmental service projects and programs sponsored by the State-wide organization. An additional nine members of the class will complete their elements in coming months. Noting the “great resilience exhibited by the graduates,” Ron Grimes, Fairfax Chapter Vice President, commented on the numerous disruptions caused by the pandemic which extended the Spring class, intended to end in May, well into the Fall. Graduates completed 12 three-hour classes in earth sciences, four day-long field trips to local parks, offered group presentations, and successfully completed a 100-question final examination to complete the course.
