LANCASTER - After sharing a hanger with the Historical Aircraft Squadron at the Fairfield County Airport, a local experimental aircraft club will now have its own building.
Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 443 signed a one-year lease for $1 to build experimental aircraft and provide educational programs about aviation. The new spot is behind the HAS hanger and the county previously leased it to an air ambulance company.
There are about 900 EAA chapters and it is headquartered in Wisconsin. The local chapter has about 35 members. Experimental aircraft started like 30-some years ago with a group of guys that built their own airplanes, chapter president Mike Baldwin said. These are not production airplanes. But they re very capable airplanes. They re just not in a production environment. But we do a lot of other things besides supporting home-built and experimental aircraft.
