Hospital probe after cancer patient s delayed diagnosis led to premature death

CONCERNS have been raised by a coroner after a series of delays in diagnosis and treatment for a cancer patient who subsequently passed away. Matthew Cox, assistant coroner for the area of Manchester North, recently issued a report to prevent future deaths to the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust following an inquest into the death of Monica McCormick, who died in May 2020, aged 79. The inquest found Mrs McCormick attended Fairfield General Hospital for a CT scan in October 2019 which discovered the presence of a tumour. She was transferred to North Manchester General Hospital for surgery and tissue samples were taken and sent for testing, but evidence showing she had a tumour was not communicated to her or her GP, meaning she was unaware of the diagnosis.
