Area voters have a chance to make a difference for FHS students on November 9. The Fairmont Area School District’s proposed $6.73 million vocational expansion project could offer a lot of positive influence for area kids and local communities.
The new facility will focus on automotive, welding, agriculture, culinary, and construction trades. That will enable them to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation or go on to more schooling, with the hope that students will come back to the area later.
We hope voters will take the opportunity to support the project.
Local vaccines
There has been some progress in the battle against COVID-19. According to one statistic reported Tuesday, Minnesota now has nearly as many people who have at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine as it has recorded cases of the virus. FAIRMONT The Fairmont Area School District will begin its rolling start return to school plan for students at the high school starting on Monday. The plan was approved by the district’s COVID-19 consult team on Thursday.
During Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Joe Brown said they were considering bringing back all students in grades 7-12 full-time four days a week, but having all students do distance learning every Wednesday.
However, the consult team, which is made up of Fairmont school administrators, representatives of the Minnesota Department of Health and representatives of the Minnesota Department of Education, said the high school needed to implement a rolling start with three grade levels at a time for a period of two weeks.

FAIRMONT The Fairmont School Board had a lengthy discussion Tuesday about whether or not to bring high school students back to school full-time next week.
High School students are currently in a hybrid model, with half of the student body attending school in person during the first two days of the week and the other half attending school in person the last two days of the week. On Wednesdays, the entire student body does distance learning.
The elementary students all came back to school in person last week.
“We have approximately 38 students who have chosen to do distance learning but otherwise the vast majority of elementary students have come back in person,” Fairmont Area Superintendent Joe Brown said.

The purpose of the meeting was to identify the needs for the facility and the programming that will go into it, inform the public of the vision and provide the public with information needed to make an educated vote on the $6.73 million bond referendum on Feb. 9.
The meeting was led by Jake Tietje, principal of program development for the Fairmont district. Just a handful of people attended Tuesday evening’s meeting, but it was also streamed online by Gemini Studios.
