Work starts on replacing storm-wrecked bridge linking Fife coastal path with Aberdour

Work starts on replacing storm-wrecked bridge linking Fife coastal path with Aberdour © SYSTEM The replacement of a key bridge on the Fife Coastal Path, which collapsed during severe storms in 2020, has taken a major step forward. Engineers have carried out an in-depth survey of the Aberdour Harbour bridge to assess the extent of the damage and what it will take to repair. Summer floods On August 12 last year Fife suffered more than a month’s rainfall in just 24 hours resulting in flooding throughout the region. In Aberdour flood water from the Dour Burn washed away abutments, as well as banking and structural supports, which eventually lead to the bridge being removed amid fears over safety.

OnFife libraries, museums and local studies will reopen from 26 April

Kingdom FM OnFife is looking forward to a summer of activity and sunshine. The easing of restrictions mean the culture charity’s Libraries, Museums and Galleries are preparing to open their doors again from April 26. “Much has changed over the last year but what hasn’t is the desire to reconnect and be entertained again so we’re really looking forward to welcoming our audiences back with activities designed to make them laugh, sing and forget about life for a while,” said Michelle Sweeney, Director of Creative Development. OnFife will be taking a collaborative approach to their summer programme by working with Fife Council, Fife Sports & Leisure and Fife Coast and Countryside to deliver a fun packed package of activities and experiences.  More details to be confirmed.

New study improves marine climate change evidence base

Date Time New study improves marine climate change evidence base Scientists from the University of St Andrews and Marine Scotland have undertaken the first full mapping of carbon stores across the UK’s offshore Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to provide updated evidence for those trying to address aspects of climate and environmental change. Marine sediments accumulating on the ocean floor act as traps and long-term stores of carbon. The new article, published in Frontiers in Earth Science today (4 March 2021), is the first comprehensive assessment of the entire UK EEZ carbon stock and provides a new methodological framework to map carbon in shelf sea sediments that could be applied worldwide. The research provides a UK-wide national break-down of carbon stocks in marine sediments, placing Scotland’s shelf seas very much at the forefront of these natural resources.
