Hit hard by COVID early, Albany gets mass vaccination site

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) At one point early in the pandemic, Albany, Georgia was outpacing all but three cities across United States for coronavirus infections per capita. Now, the south Georgia city is home to one of four state-supported mass vaccination sites.
Many people in Albany were touched by coronavirus early on, but the city has made major strides since March’s tragedies. Thousands of people will be able to receive vaccinations in Albany’s Dougherty County starting Monday, Feb. 22, when the state’s four sites will open.

Earlier this week, Phoebe Sumter Medical center experienced a vaccine shipment delay, resulting from last week’s winter storms.
As a result, the Americus hospital was forced to reschedule appointments for people receiving their second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Fortunately, CEO Brandi Lunneburg says the new shipment of the vaccine was delivered Thursday, and the hospital plans to pick back up next week with dishing out the doses to people in Sumter County.

As of noon Friday, these were Phoebe’s COVID-19 numbers:
Total COVID-19 patients in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital – 39
Total COVID-19 patients in Phoebe Sumter Medical Center – 12
Total COVID-19 patients in Phoebe Worth Medical Center – 0
Total inpatients recovered – 2,105
Total positive deaths from Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital – 245
Total positive deaths from Phoebe Sumter – 63
Total vaccines administered – 32,984
